A below-par week and news of a sale overseas means a clear out and a few new faces this week.

ONE RETAINED

Outgun fared best of the four that ran over the last seven days, finishing second at Newmarket. He is retained as a larger field may help him settle better and he still looks well-enough treated.

FOUR RELEASED

The other trio – Wonder Legend, Lady Pink Rose and Ameynah – are all let go.

The latter was the most disappointing and it may well be she was backed up too quickly after her long absence before Ascot, but that means we would be waiting a while for her to be of interest again and her lightly-raced profile may mean there are also other issues at play.

I have also been told that Perfuse is heading overseas and won’t be appearing again on these shores, so that is another one removed.

FOUR ADDED

This leaves us a bit short of numbers, so it was good that there were quite a few who caught the eye at the meetings I was at.

Richard Hannon’s stable seem to be picking up, and there are two of his that are added, along with another couple from the weekend:

SEDGEMOOR (last ran at Salisbury on 16 August). Was green on the way down to the start and shaped throughout as if he was understanding what was required behind a runaway winner. Clearly best of the rest and, with this under his belt, he can win a maiden for a yard that have been unusually quiet so far with their juveniles.

CLASSIC (last ran at Newbury on 19 August). Travelled notably strongly towards the rear but sitting so far back meant he would need a clean passage through that he didn’t get. He only got a 2lb rise for his Sandown win and still looks well-treated.

STRONG JOHNSON (last ran at Ripon on 19 August) looks another sprinter that Paul Midgley can find openings for. His mark had been in freefall since joining Paul until a better run at York was followed by him winning his side of the Great St Wilfrid consolation. He joined the yard rated 92 and has the potential to run up a sequence now he is only rated in the low 70s.

SKELLET ran in the newcomers’ race at Sandown on Sunday (20 August) and would have gone close with anything like a clear run in the closing stages. She was sent off favourite, an indication that she had shown ability at home, and was also taking on the boys. A fillies’ maiden or novice looks hers for the taking.
