Richard Hoiles' Horse Tracker: My horses to follow
Follow this article to stay up to date with which horses the racing commentator is keeping his eye on this season.
All horses were added to the tracker on 28 June 2023 unless otherwise stated.
BRIAR ROSE
Added on 14 August 2023. Would have finished far closer on debut at Windsor with anything like luck in running. Ed Dunlop is having a good time with his juveniles and she is eligible to run in lower-grade Restricted Novices and Maidens. Hopefully she can be entered up with that in mind and prove a sleeping beauty.
CHERRY BLOSSOM
Added on 30 July 2023. Sent off favourite on her debut in Listed company at Naas, and showed more than enough to suggest she can win next time on her way to potentially much better things.
CLASSIC
Added on 21 August 2023. Travelled notably strongly towards the rear of a race at Newbury on 19 August, but sitting so far back meant he would need a clean passage through that he didn’t get. He only got a 2lb rise for his Sandown win and still looks well-treated.
DESIGNER
Added on8 August 2023. Shaped like the second-best horse in the opener on Tuesday having been shuffled back when looking for a run. He performed well at this stage of the season last year and will have similar options in the short term.
FORGET YOU NOT
Added on 25 July 2023. Fared best of those that set an overly-strong pace in the last at Newton Abbot on 23 July. It would be no surprise if he didn’t appear again until a race at Exeter in October that he has won previously.
GRANNY HAWKINS
Showed a lot of promise behind a decent Nicky Henderson horse in a bumper at Southwell. Is being given time to strengthen up but is one to keep an eye out for when she returns.
INSANITY
After a lot a promise at Windsor on debut his second run at Chelmsford was very disappointing. Easy to jump ship but it was clearly not his running and has a good reputation at home. Gelding could be a possibility and a track with a longer straight.
MAGGIE'S WAY
Added on 14 August 2023. As long as connections do not persist in aiming for black type, her handicap mark looks very workable, especially with cut in the ground.
MAIRIS ICON
Out of a mare the stable did well with, she very much looked as if she was being prepared for handicaps when third at Newton Abbot at the end of May. She will also hopefully go up in trip when she goes handicapping.
OUTGUN
Added on 25 July 2023. Retained after finishing second at Newmarket on 19 August. Still looks well-enough treated and a larger field may help him settle better.
SEDGEMOOR
Added on 21 August 2023. Was green on the way down to the start at Salisbury on 16 August and shaped throughout as if he was understanding what was required behind a runaway winner. Clearly best of the rest and, with this under his belt, he can win a maiden for a yard that have been unusually quiet so far with their juveniles.
SKELLET
Added on 21 August 2023. Ran in the newcomers’ race at Sandown on 20 August and would have gone close with anything like a clear run in the closing stages. She was sent off favourite, an indication that she had shown ability at home, and was also taking on the boys. A fillies’ maiden or novice looks hers for the taking.
STRONG JOHNSON
Added on 21 August 2023. His mark had been in freefall since joining Paul Midgley until a better run at York was followed by him winning his side of the Great St Wilfrid consolation. He joined the yard rated 92 and has the potential to run up a sequence now he is only rated in the low 70s.
