I thought the whole issue with the heat at Cheltenham was well-handled by the stewards.

The welfare of the horses is obviously the most important thing. There were plenty of people on hand to cool the horses off after racing and to make sure they were getting plenty of fluids on board.

I think the issue was the shock to the horses from the change in temperature and you have to be very careful in these situations.

We as jockeys respect the decision of the stewards and veterinary staff. They are best-placed to make the decision about the wellbeing of the horses.

I rode Dame Rose in the first race and it was tragic what happened to her. My thoughts are with her and her connections.

Ayr on Saturday

I kick off my rides on Saturday with Keeper Hill  for Warren [Greatrex] in the handicap chase (14.20).

He’s been a bit unlucky on his last two starts, as he’s usually a very sound jumper, but has just made a couple of small mistakes which have led to him falling.

He schooled really well during the week and I’d like to think he’s got a solid chance in what looks a very competitive race.

My next ride is I’m A Game Changer  in the Scottish Champion Hurdle (14.55).

Philip [Hobbs] and the owners have been very patient with him, and kept him back before he won well at Ludlow earlier in the month.

This is a bit of a step up in class, but he’s well in on official ratings and I’d be pretty hopeful of him getting involved at the finish.

I’m expecting him to go well and I think he could easily outrun his odds.

My final ride on Saturday is Anemoi  for Harry Whittington in the bumper (17.50).

He was an impressive winner on his debut at Huntingdon earlier in the year.

This race is stronger than that one, but he looked a decent sort and hopefully he can continue to improve.

I haven’t got a ride in the Scottish Grand National (16.05), but you’ve got to respect Vicente  , who is looking for his third consecutive win in the race.

He obviously loves it around Ayr so you wouldn’t be surprised to see him involved again.

As always, it’s an incredibly competitive handicap and, if the weather stays as it is, you’ve got to be looking for horses that have got form on good ground.

Wincanton on Sunday

Philip has a couple entered in the opening novices’ hurdle (14.15) and I’m riding Costly Dream. Both him and Cotswold Way have run consistently so far this season.

They’ll both have to improve again here, though, as it looks a competitive race with a number looking to have solid chances.

Little Miss Poet runs in the handicap hurdle (14.50) and the likely better ground will definitely be in her favour.

She’s run competitively on her last couple of runs on ground that’s been slower than is ideal for her.

Hopefully the drying will give her a good chance of being there at the business end.

I ride Cranstal in the novices’ hurdle (16.25) who is having just his second run.

His first run at Huntingdon should have taught him a fair amount and he should come on from that.

My best ride of the day is Tidal Flow in the bumper (17.30).

He won well at Newbury first time out and we’ve been waiting to find a bit of better ground for him.

I’d like to think he goes there with a strong chance even though this is a hotter race than last time.

If he can reproduce the run from Newbury, he should go very well.
