It was a shame what happened at Fontwell on Monday. The horse in front of me veered badly to the left when the tapes went up and took my horse with it. I was left in mid-air and just couldn’t stay on.

It’s just one of those things. It was no-one’s fault, but it was very frustrating as Umndeni was my best chance of the day and I missed a winner in the next as well.

I knew when I was coming off that there were lots of horses behind me and it would be a miracle if one of them didn’t tread on or kick me.

I was on the ground for quite a bit with a really bad dead leg. It was very painful at the start, it almost feels like someone’s broken your leg for the first 60 seconds. I was pleased that I could move and hobble to the truck.

Fortunately, nothing was broken, I was just badly bruised and stiff for the next couple of days. You get a deep, throbbing pain when you get a bad bruise like that. It’s more of a sharp pain when you break a bone and every time you move it gets sharper.

Ice and the physio really helped. I’m lucky in that I’ve got a great physio called Kate Davis who only lives 10 minutes up the road. She’s mainly in rugby and ballet, funnily enough, but she called in to see me on Monday night and Tuesday morning.

I grew up with Kate and it’s very handy to have someone like that so local. She’s been a great help to me over the last few years and, with rugby being such a high impact sport, their physios are second to none.

Haydock on Saturday

There’s an inspection at Haydock on Saturday morning, but let’s hope it’s on.

The main reason I’m going up there is to ride Western Ryder  in the Champion Hurdle Trial (14:40).

He ran really well at Ascot last time and Cheltenham before that. The form is rock solid and although this is a competitive race, nothing really stands out above the rest. I’d like to think he goes there with a very strong chance.

He’s been a steady improver over the last 18 months, hopefully there are still a few more pounds to come. Silver Streak looks the one we have to beat on ratings.

I’m riding Colin Tizzard’s Robinsfirth  for the first time in the Peter Marsh Chase (15:15).

He won his last start at Cheltenham in December 2017, but I wouldn’t be worried about the gap given the yard he’s in.

The Tizzard horses are in good form and there’s no reason to suggest he won’t run a big race. It looks very open.

My final ride of the day is Flashjack  for Henry Daly in the 3m handicap hurdle (16:15).

He’s been in good form, but I wonder if he’s in the grip of the handicapper at the moment. I’m sure he’ll run well, there might just be one or two better handicapped.

They’re due some rain and that won’t be a problem. You’ll need to stay.

Exeter on Sunday

Just the one ride for me at Exeter on Sunday with Young Lieutenant for Warren Greatrex in the bumper (16:30).

He ran fairly well in a bumper at Wetherby the other day, but he’d need to improve to win this. I’d say he’d have a fair chance of finishing in the first three, though.

Altior is the best horse in training

Altior is going to be a very short price in the Clarence House Chase at Ascot on Saturday. Fox Norton is a good horse but I’d be very surprised if he could beat him.

Altior is the best horse in training. It’s nice for the public that they’re running him quite a bit this season. It’s great to have a horse like him around.
