This Class 2 one-mile handicap is wide open and a case could be made for plenty of the runners.

ALTERNATIVE FACT 5/1, who is having his first run since July after having a mid-season break, is worth watching out for.

He’s really got his act together this season and has shown a good level of consistency. He'll love any cut in the ground. If he’s fit enough on his first start, he could go very close.

On just his third start this season, Crownthorpe has slipped to a mark that is just 1lb higher than his latest winning mark, and is another who will appreciate the heavens opening.

I do think he’ll come on for this run and could be dropped again in the handicap before winning, but he does have the ability.

Milltown Star ran way above what his market position expected at Doncaster last time and has been dropped a pound in the handicap, too. Any market support for him will be telling.

The Cheveley Park Stakes is a Group One race for two-year-old fillies over six furlongs.

It’s a mightily competitive race, with the unbeaten Dandalla heading the field.

She has kept improving with each start this season, but the question must be asked about the level of improvement she has left in her.

For that reason, and despite the fact that she only won last week, I'm going for UMM KULTHUM 13/2. She looked like a filly with huge potential, one that is still green but progressing quickly.

There shouldn’t be that much of a price discrepancy. It would be great for Paul Hanagan to ride a group one winner after the tough time he’s had of late, too.

Three weeks ago, over course and distance, COUNT D'ORSAY 9/2 beat Came From The Dark in a soft ground sprint race and that form is likely to continue.

Both of them need the ground to stay on the softer side, however.

If the ground is good or quicker, both Copper Knight, who is now very well handicapped, and recent winner Mid Winster should come into the reckoning.

The former is on his lowest mark for nearly two years and the latter looks unexposed and fast improving.

The Cambridgeshire is always one of the most competitive and tricky handicaps of the year and this one is no different.

Tempus, who is still progressing and is clearly going to be better than handicap class in time, should be high on any list.

He was a very good winner at Ascot last time and has the profile for a race of this nature.

Betway ambassador Andrew Balding saddles BELL ROCK 12/1, who is still lightly-raced and is another horse we’re yet to see the best of.

He was a good winner – taking his record at the course to two from two – in June, before running a respectable sixth in a quick return in the Hunt Cup at Ascot just 10 days later.

He then ran five weeks later at Goodwood, where he finished third behind a well-handicapped horse. He didn’t get the best of passages in that race and flew home when the race was already lost.

He’s been kept fresh for this race and his high draw of 24 looks as though it could work well for him, too.
