The Betway Handicap over seven furlongs has a select field of six going to post, but a case could be made for all the runners.

GIFTED RULER   is yet to show us everything that he is capable of, but this race looks a good opportunity for him to get his head in front.

He was fourth in a good maiden on his debut and followed that run with a gutsy success on heavy ground at Haydock.

He then finished fourth in a Listed race in France, again doing his best work at the end of the race.

He blew the start in his seasonal debut at Lingfield at the start of June in a Britannia Handicap trial, but did make headway once the race was all over. That would have put him spot on and this small field will be to his liking.

The Gosforth Park Cup is a five-furlong sprint on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface and there are plenty of horses who are going to make it a real test.

Lahore  seemed to come of age when he bolted up at Doncaster just under two weeks ago but has never been overly reliable and has a career-high mark to run off here.

At a much bigger price, ORNATE   must come into the reckoning. He often starts his races very well and has managed to slip back to a mark of 99, which is the same mark he was on when he won the Dash at Epsom on Derby Day last year.

He often goes well on synthetic surfaces and was only beaten by a neck on his last start at Newcastle.

There is a question mark over his trainer’s form but he has the ability to run a huge race if he comes here in good form.

The Betway Criterion Stakes is the feature race at Newmarket. Last year’s winner Limato  will surely be popular, but he’s too inconsistent for my liking and usually improves for his first run of the season.

VALE OF KENT   has the help of Frankie Dettori on his back and I can see this improving five-year-old going very well in this Group 3.

He finished third on his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket behind Marie’s Diamond, who went on to finish third in the Group 1 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot.

He then ran very well in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot last week on ground slightly softer than ideal. Now back to quick conditions, he’s got a great chance in a wide open race.

Yafta  will also go close under Ryan Moore following a good comeback run earlier in the month.

The Northumberland Plate is a very competitive race run over an extended 2m at Newcastle.

SMART CHAMPION   runs for David Simcock and is handily drawn in stall seven. You might not think the draw will matter too much when the race is this far, but getting a good early position to be able to travel well is key.

He was last seen running a huge race at Royal Ascot when he was fourth to Coeur De Lion. He is lightly raced but has obviously been a slow developer and it looks as though it’s all coming together for him now.

Magic Circle  wasn’t far off the best stayers around a couple of years ago and he has slipped to a mark of 108, which makes him look well-handicapped.

It’ll be a tough task off top weight, but his trainer Ian Williams is very good at getting them right on the biggest days, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise.

John Ryan saddles two horses, Hiroshima   and Sevenna Star  , both of whom have some useful form in the book and could be players at huge prices.
