14:40 HAYDOCK

This 1m handicap is ultra-competitive and there are a few horses than ran well at Royal Ascot that have caught my eye.

Shelir   ran a huge race last time out and stayed on nicely to finish fifth in the opening race on the first day at Ascot. As a two-year-old he was very highly tried by his shrewd trainer, suggesting he always showed his connections that he had plenty of ability.

ALTERNATIVE FACT  finished third in the Silver Hunt Cup last time which followed a good run at Haydock. He’ll be suited by this galloping track and the yard’s horses are going well.

Alan King enjoyed tremendous success at the Royal meeting and his mount Aweedram  has managed to sneak in at the bottom here.

He ran okay over 1m2f at Newbury on his return, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be a hindrance to drop back to 1m in a race where there is sure to be plenty of pace.

The Investec Handicap over 1m2f has attracted a 16-strong field which includes last weekend’s easy Newmarket scorer Desert Icon  .

The son of Sea The Stars is a steady improver and did run some good races in defeat last season. He is due to go up an additional 6lb next week, so is well-in here and must have a fine chance if he’s in the same form as last Sunday’s bloodless victory.

At bigger prices, PLANTADREAM   can put his Royal Ascot run behind him on return to better ground.

And, if top-weight Certain Lad  is ready on his first run of the season, he can certainly be in the mix as he has some of the best form in the book. His trainer Mick Channon is also enjoying a good run of form.

16:25 HAYDOCK

Arch Moon  went into plenty of notebooks when he hosed up at Haydock last month and had clearly improved from two to three.

He has been put up just 4lb for that success, and a look back at that race would suggest that he'll be able to cope with such rise. He won with some authority that day, but this is a much tougher race.

Whilst he’s still a maiden, MASTER THE STARS   has shown plenty of promise in his two starts to date - at Yarmouth last season and Wolverhampton on his first start this term.

He was a good second to an impressive winner last time and, despite travelling like the best horse in the race, he got tapped for toe.

This step up in trip will be a huge help and he looks sure to go well under David Allan, who has a 33% strike-rate when teaming up with trainer Ed Dunlop.

17:35 EPSOM

The closing Investec Zebra Handicap is another hotly-contested handicap at Epsom, with 16 going to post.

The race includes last year’s first and second Corazon Espinado  and Hateya  , both of whom will have good chances to repeat last year’s efforts.

DIRTY RASCAL   finished dead last at Royal Ascot, but he pulled very hard over 6f and, with that run under his belt and a return to 7f, he could put that effort behind him.

He won a much better race at Goodwood last July, so the ability is there and he clearly acts on a track with undulations.

At the bottom of the card, Medieval  sneaks in off a featherweight after slipping down the handicap. On his day he’s got some very useful form in the book and his stable are flying this term.

Any return to form will see the six-year-old run very well at a big price.
