14:40 AYR

First up, we have a really tough race in the Ayr Silver Cup. The one who is standing out to me is QUICK LOOK .

Michael Easterby’s five-year-old is a bit of a handicap specialist, winning his last two. That included beating 18 others at York in July, and then winning the Silver Trophy at Ripon very impressively.

Harrison Shaw helped that day with his 5lbs claim on board, and there's another claimer in the saddle here with Scott McCullagh Saturday.

Proven over the 6f, and with a reasonable draw, I think he’ll be right in the mix.

15:30 NEWBURY

Over to Newbury, where I think last year’s winner TAKE COVER  looks set to retain this Group 3.

The 11-year-old has been a magnificent horse for David Griffiths, with notable highlights including a runner-up to Battash in the King George Stakes at Goodwood and recently completed back-to-back wins in the Beverley Bullet.

He put in a respectable performance in the Flying Five last weekend at Group 1 level, and is right back in his comfort zone. He looks a nice bet.

15:50 AYR

The big race of the day is up next: the Ayr Gold Cup. We have six places on offer.

I’m going for Richard Fahey’s experienced GEORGE BOWEN  as my main bet here.

The six-year-old relishes these fields and has had some big performances this season, including big wins at York and Hamilton, two seconds at Doncaster and Goodwood, and some good showings in the Wokingham and Stewards’ Cup.

He’s a proven winner over this distance, and, with the familiar presence of Seb Woods riding, looks a huge price.

16:40 NEWBURY

Finishing off at Newbury, and despite What A Welcome coming into the race in scintillating form, I think COMPTON MILL  looks a good bet here.

He followed up a nice winner at Sandown at the start of August with a runner-up on the same course on the Solario Stakes day.

He seems to relish softer ground, and has also tasted victory over 1m 4f.

Really well handicapped at 8-13, and with trusty Silvestre De Sousa riding, I’m hopeful he can go close.
