Saturday racing tips: Best bets for Hamilton and Goodwood
Our tipster reveals his three best bets for Friday's racing at Glorious Goodwood and Hamilton.
16:50 Goodwood: Pogo
It's not easy to find the winner in any Goodwood handicap.
Bar last year where the Vale of Kent prevailed at 5/2F, no favourite has won in the previous 10 years of this race. It’s been a common theme this week to look at Mark Johnston trained horses and the Malton handler saddled three of the last four winners of this race.
I don't believe that the prize is going back to his yard this year. Pogo, trained by Charlie Hills, has been on my radar for a while and I’ve got every reason to think this horse has improved this year.
On his first start this season he ran in the Burradon Stakes at Newcastle and showed up for a long way before the lack of fitness took its toll in the final furlong.
On his next start, he competed in a better race at Newmarket and obliged comfortably, despite traffic problems. He was then seventh in the German 2000 Guineas, where the race was won from the front and he was held up.
His latest start was in the Britannia at Royal Ascot. Again, he suffered a nightmare passage and was eased down in the final furlong, so the form line is not offering a true reflection of his run.
Still off a mark of 100, I expect him to be held up in midfield under James Doyle and if he gets a clear run, he could be just be better than this field.
19:20 Hamilton: Tarboosh
Paul Midgley is a trainer known for getting the best out of his sprinters and Tarboosh is, on ratings, up there with the best he’s had in his care.
He won this race last year before going on to further success, and this race will surely bring him on for bigger targets throughout the late summer.
He has run very well in each of his four starts this season, but something must have been amiss given his connections opted to perform wind surgery on him.
A condition’s stakes race means he can run off level weights with the older horses and I think if that wind surgery has worked, he’ll take an awful lot of beating here.
