2.25 – Cumberland Lodge Stakes (Ascot)

I’m not a fan of backing short-priced favourites but I’m struggling to see how WALDGEIST  won’t win this race.

The Galileo colt has two wins and two seconds from five runs so far – his most impressive being the De Saint-Cloud Group 1 where he beat Best Solution and St Leger winner Capri.

Bottom weight at 8-10 means he is very well-handicapped and has a big advantage over Godolphin’s Secret Number  .

The jump to 1m 4f is a minor concern but I’m sure the experienced Vincent Cheminaud can guide him home.

2.40 – Sun Chariot Stakes (Newmarket)

ROLY POLY  was an impressive winner in the Falmouth Stakes on this course in July.

He followed that up with a Group 1 at Deauville, where he beat three horses he'll face in this race including favourite Persuasive Qemah   and Usherette  .

Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore won this race last year with Alice Springs and I think they could repeat that triumph on Saturday.

3.00 Bengough Stakes (Ascot)

Another short-priced favourite I can’t see getting beat is Godolphin’s BLUE POINT  .

The three-year-old has four wins and four placed finishes from nine, with a fourth in the Sprint Cup last time out the first occasion he has been outside the top three.

He beat the mighty Harry Angel on this course in the Pavillion Stakes in May and was also a decent third in the Commonwealth Cup.

William Buick returns to ride after a long injury and I’m confident he’ll come back to a winning start.

3.35 – Challenge Cup (Ascot)

With Betway offering five places in the biggest race of the day in the Challenge Cup, there are some tasty each-way shouts here.

The first of these is Karl Burke’s MJJACK  , who comes into this race in decent form (117-22).

His last two runs were on this course in large handicap fields in the Cunard and Gigaset that saw him finish runner-up in both.

Clifford Lee brings his 3lb claim on board and with the three-year-old well-handicapped at 8-13, he should have a big each-way chance.

The other one I like is David O’Meara’s FIRMAMENT  .

Granted, he doesn’t come into the race in particularly good form and hasn’t won since the Logistics Stakes in 2016.

However, he’s suited to these conditions and has a good record in big handicaps on this course with form reading (223-55).

Betway are paying a generous FIVE places in the 3.35 Challenge Cup at Ascot.

4.25 – EBF Fillies Handicap (Newmarket)

Final tip of the day and the one I like here is Roger Varian’s SHENANIGANS .

She’s a decent filly with three wins, two seconds and a third from her eight trips so far.

The three-year-old has won her last two by 1¼ lengths and was a course-and-distance winner here a fortnight ago.

Frankie Dettori takes the ride for the first time looking to complete a hat-trick of wins.
