It’s been a week since Royal Ascot finished, but now it's time to bounce back from any blues.

It’s Derby Day in Ireland and there’s also some top-quality racing at Newmarket and Newcastle.

Here’s your weekend double and tips for the Northumberland Plate and Irish Derby.

Ian Williams to take the Prize in the Northumberland Vase

media

We kick things off in the Toon for the 3.00pm Northumberland Vase in a tough 2m contest.

I tipped LONDON PRIZE when he won the Imperial Cup at Sandown in March and I think he’s the one to beat here.

He’s a versatile six-year-old who’s got a decent record in both jumps and the flat, and having already proven himself over 2m, he’s going to be tough to beat.

He won commandingly last time out at Goodwood by eight lengths and his last five runs on the flat reads good form (211-21).

He was a runner-up on this course in February’s Betway Handicap to Godolphin’s Natural Scenery so has experience on the All-Weather.

This is a safe bet at .

Jaameh should go close in the Northumberland Plate

media

Next up is the big one from Newcastle – the 3.30pm Northumberland Plate.

There are 20 entered in this handicap to battle out the 2m with Sir Mark Prescott’s Flymetothestars a narrow favourite.

The four-year-old has three wins from four and is course.

James Fanshawe triumphed with The Tin Man in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes last weekend and could have another big shout as Tom Queally rides in-form Higher Power.

However, I’m drawn to Mark Johnston’s JAAMEH here.

He’s a fairly consistent four-year-old who has really shown his best form since the turn of the year.

He has also won his last two at Newmarket and Chester and also finished a credible second at Haydock in May.

Proven over 1m 6f, I don’t think the extra 2f will cause an issue here and given he’s well handicapped at 9-0, he looks good value at .

Home Of The Brave can triumph in the Betway Criterion Stakes

media

Attention switches across to Newmarket now for the 3.15pm Betway Criterion Stakes where eight battle out the 7f.

David Simcock’s Breton Rock won this race last year and is among the favourites to repeat that triumph.

However, I’m siding more with Godolphin’s HOME OF THE BRAVE.

Trained by Hugo Palmer, the five-year-old has really stepped up since last year and comes into the race with three wins and two seconds from his last six.

He is a proven winner over 7f and, having won two out of his three rides on this course, looks the one to beat at  .

Pat Smullen eyeing successive wins in the Irish Derby

media

Finishing off with the biggest race of the day – the 5.20 Irish Derby.

Aidan O’Brien will be buoyant on his chances on landing another Group 1 here with five of the nine in the field from his yard.

His best chance lies with the 40/1 Epsom Derby winner Wings Of Eagles, who is looking to complete the double.

French Galileo colt Waldgeist has looked very impressive for far with two wins and two seconds, including last time out when he was runner-up behind Brametot in the French Derby.

However, I think John Gosden’s CRACKSMAN is the one to watch here.

The Frankel colt had won his first two in impressive fashion before he finished third in the Epsom Derby.

Frankie Dettori gave him a good run that day and the only major concern Saturday is the additional two furlongs.

Pat Smullen rode Harzand to victory here 12 months ago and if he can get CRACKSMAN into a nice stride then he has a good chance of repeating that triumph.

At  I think he’s the one to be backing here.
