The Blandford Stakes is a Group 2 for fillies and mares over 1m2f.
Despite finishing second on all three of her racecourse starts this term, CAYENNE PEPPER 5/1 remains a horse of high class and I think she’ll get her head in front here.
She was promising as a two-year-old and carried that into the start of her third year as she was second behind Magical on her seasonal debut. She backed that up with a good second in the Irish Oaks, which is the best piece of form this race has to offer.
She was slightly disappointing when she was beaten last time out, but travelled well over a mile-and-a-half and looks as if she’ll be suited for the drop in trip here.
14:55 CHELMSFORD
This six-furlong sprint handicap is a competitive race despite only attracting seven runners.
You could make a case for most of the horses in this race, but I’m looking forward to seeing BURIDAN 5/1 dropped back to six furlongs. I actually think he’s a better horse on the all-weather, so a return to a synthetic surface will help.
He is now 1lb lower than his latest winning mark. He’s been unlucky in running a few times but hopefully with a small field, he won’t encounter those problems and will keep up the good run of form for his trainer Richard Hannon.
15:25 CHELMSFORD
Despite having to concede weight to the whole field, SILVER LINE 100/30 is the best horse in the field and one who has proven his ability at group level. He’s yet to show us the best of his ability but has been very tricky to train as he’s still lightly-raced.
With these types of horses, first time out is often the best time to catch them, and I think a turning seven furlongs could suit this horse, who will be running on past horses at the end of the race.
ALJARI is the obvious danger and was a really good winner last time out, so I couldn’t put anyone off him.
16:40 CURRAGH
The Irish St Leger is open for all ages, unlike the British equivalent which is confined to three year olds, however it is run over the same trip of 1m6f.
English raider FUJAIRA PRINCE 7/2 is bidding to complete big-race hat-trick following his successes at both Royal Ascot and in the Ebor at York. He has to improve again though.
The obvious selection is last year’s Irish Derby winner SOVEREIGN 11/4, who is a group one horse and is the most talented in this field. He finished second behind Enable in the King George at Ascot in July and brings solid group one form to the table.
He should take all of the beating under Ryan Moore.
