The feature race at Ripon is the Book Now For Saturday 19th August Handicap for three-year-olds. Despite being a small field, it is a tricky race and a case can be made for all six involved. 

However, WHISPERING ROYAL SP, trained by Alan King could represent some value on his handicap debut. A 1m all-weather maiden winner in Ireland prior to transferring to his current stable, he has run solid races in defeat in a Doncaster novice and Windsor handicap since. Though both those races were over 1m2f on good ground, he looked in need of further on the latest of those runs and his sire, Gustav Klimt, coped well with cut in the ground, so he looks some value to score. 

Fellow handicap debutant, Mordor, trained by David Simcock, could be his biggest danger. 

The opening race on the Ripon card, the Ripon Races Green Scheme Apprentice Handicap can go the way of the bang in-form TEMPER TRAP SP for the second consecutive year. 

Trained by Tim Easterby, who does so well at this track, he bolted up by 6l in this last year off a mark of 60 and, though he is racing off 4lb higher today, that shouldn't be enough to stop him following up. 

He has won at Doncaster and Hamilton (three days ago) on his last two starts, both on soft ground, so conditions will hold no fears for him and it will be a surprise if he is beaten. The solid Chagall could prove to be his main danger. 

For jumps fans, there is a meeting over at Roscommon and the best bet on the card looks to be in the opening Railway Bar Maiden Hurdle. 

There is a full field of 16 runners and several have claims after recent placed efforts but the Henry de Bromhead-trained mare GENTLE AND KIND SP is the pick under the brilliant Rachael Blackmore.

She won a point-to-point back in 2021 before meeting with a setback but re-appeared for this top yard after over two years away with a fine second place over hurdles at Kilbeggan. The winner of that race, Castra Vetera, was much more experienced and has franked the form since when five lengths fourth in a Listed novice hurdle at Galway last week. With significant improvement likely from that outing, this mare can start making up for lost time and get off the mark under Rules.
