CAROLINA PANTHERS (-2.5) vs Pittsburgh Steelers
Despite trading away their best player halfway through the season, the Panthers have clawed their way to a 5-8 record and a shot at winning the weak NFC South.
They’ve leant on their running game to win two straight games and three of their last four, and have allowed just 15.5 points per game during that four-game run.
Carolina’s defence should continue to thrive at home against Pittsburgh, who will likely be without injured starting quarterback Kenny Pickett. Starting in his place will be either Mitch Trubisky, who threw three interceptions last week, or Mason Rudolph, who has been inactive for every game this season.
The Steelers have struggled to stop the run in the past few weeks, which is the strength of the Panthers’ offense, so this is a bad match-up on both sides of the ball for Pittsburgh.
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (-8.5) vs Chicago Bears
The Eagles have been the best team in the NFL all year and seem to be getting better and better. They’ve won their last three games 40-33, 35-10 and 48-22, with quarterback Jalen Hurts establishing himself as the odds-on favourite to win NFL MVP.
Hurts and the Eagles’ offense look poised for a huge performance against a Bears defence that has allowed 25.6 points per game this season, the third-highest mark in the NFL.
Chicago’s Justin Fields has looked like a franchise quarterback over the second half of the season, but his team have lost six straight games and now face their worst match-up to date.
The Eagles have allowed the fewest passing yards of any team in the NFL this season and should have little problem shutting down the Bears on Sunday.
NEW YORK JETS (-1.5) vs Detroit Lions
The Jets have been one of the NFL’s best defensive teams all season, allowing the sixth-fewest points and second-fewest yards of any team in the league.
They’ve lost two straight games to the Vikings and Bills, but they look a good bet to bounce back at home against the Lions in a game that will likely be affected by the weather.
The Lions have won their last two games and have been great offensively this season, but their passing game could struggle against a combination of the Jets’ defence and the cold, windy conditions in New York.
Detroit have gone 2-3 on the road this season, averaging 18.4 points per game, compared to 32.1 at home. In what should be a more defensive contest than the Lions would like, expect the Jets to grind out a victory.
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (-2.5) vs Tennessee Titans
The Titans have lost three straight games against the Bengals, Eagles and Jaguars, conceding at least 35 points in each of the past two weeks.
A team that looked destined for the playoffs on the back of its strong defence is now 7-6 and in danger of losing its grip on the AFC South, and this week’s trip to Los Angeles will be another tough test.
The Chargers are also 7-6, having beaten the Miami Dolphins 23-17 last Sunday. They’ve struggled with inconsistency and injuries all season, but they’re now much healthier, with star receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams most notably back in the lineup.
A kind schedule over the final few weeks of the season will aid Los Angeles’ playoff push, and they should ease to a home win here.
