Senators to beat Bruins

It’s been a week for the Bruins. Tuukka Rask retired after making a brief comeback this season, Brad Marchand got suspended for going after Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry and now captain Patrice Bergeron is out with an upper-body injury. The latter two players are huge pieces of the lineup and really change the dynamic of the Bruins.

Meanwhile, the Senators have really turned a corner this season. They did lose to Pittsburgh on Thursday, but played the Pens tough and won their previous two games after the All-Star break. Ottawa is dealing with some injuries of their own, but I think the Bruins’ lineup is altered much more significantly. They lost to Carolina 6-0 in their first game without both Marchand and Bergeron.

With the Sens on home ice and how they’ve been playing of late despite player absences, I think they’ve got a good chance to find a win against a hobbled Bruins squad.

Maple Leafs to beat Canucks

The Canucks will have an extra day of rest compared to Toronto, who took one on the chin Thursday against Calgary. The Flames beat the Maple Leafs 5-2 as Toronto just couldn’t seem to find its legs against one of the hottest teams in the league.

The loss to Calgary halted a six-game winning streak for the Leafs. The Canucks, meanwhile, are coming off a tough home loss to the New York Islanders as they continue to find it difficult to string consecutive wins together. Since their seven-game winning streak after Bruce Boudreau’s arrival, Vancouver has won consecutive games just once the rest of the season.

Toronto was humbled a bit in the game against Calgary, but the Leafs have not lost consecutive games since early December and I don’t anticipate the Canucks being the team to break that trend, especially with top defenseman Quinn Hughes in COVID-19 protocols.

The Maple Leafs are mostly healthy, with all of their top offensive weapons in the lineup. They’ve also got defenseman Jake Muzzin back, which definitely strengthens their blue line. That should be enough for them to get back on track after their setback in Calgary.

Predators to beat Jets

The Jets have a grinding schedule to start out their second half. They had to take on the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday, a game they won 2-0 in an impressive showing. Then they play Dallas Friday night and then have to go right up to Nashville. That’s three huge divisional games right off the hop. The Preds meanwhile started off their second half with a close loss to Dallas on Wednesday and then were off until Saturday.

The Jets and Preds have played twice so far this season, splitting the season series to date. Nashville won the last meeting more convincingly, 5-2.

Winnipeg has a ton of ground to try to make up to get back in the playoff picture, while Nashville is settled into second place in the Central. Despite that high place in the standings, the Preds can’t feel totally comfortable at this point as the Wild and Blues are among the teams nipping at their heels.

This is a huge game for both clubs, but I think the advantage goes to the home team. Nashville has been a little less consistent in the last month or so, but they still have one of the best goaltenders in the league this season in Juuse Saros, and an offensive attack that has a lot of weapons. I think it will be tough for Winnipeg to manage that on the road.

Flames to beat Islanders

The Isles had an impressive win against Vancouver to start their second half, but now have a tough back-to-back in their own personal Battle of Alberta. New York plays the Edmonton Oilers Friday and has to turn right back around and play a Calgary Flames team that has looked more like a machine over the last few weeks.

The Flames have won five straight, and have scored four or more goals in six of their last eight games. They’ve been stingy defensively, getting good goaltending and limiting opponents chances with superior possession. In their last two games, Calgary beat Vegas and Toronto by a combined score of 11-2.

The Islanders simply don’t have the depth to keep up with a Flames squad playing this well right now.
