The most fun part of the first few weeks of the NHL season is the complete chaos before things normalize and the usual suspects emerge. Connor McDavid is, of course, already hanging out comfortably at the top among the players, but teams that no one expects to win can start strong, and contending teams can start out slow. With that chaos comes opportunity.

Vancouver Canucks to beat Philadelphia Flyers

What looked like a brilliant start ended in disaster for the Canucks in their first game of the season, jumping out to a 3-0 lead over the Edmonton Oilers before falling to pieces and allowing five straight goals. That was made even more bitter by a powerplay that went just one for eight in the game, but the Flyers are not the Oilers.

With the sting of the last game still in the back of their minds as they face a team littered with serious injuries to marquee players, expect the Canucks to play a strong game against the Flyers and take home two points.

Montreal Canadiens (+1.5) vs Washington Capitals

On the second half of a back-to-back, the Montreal Canadiens are a rebuilding team, on the road, against a team that made the playoffs last year. That makes for a very heavily-favoured Washington Capitals team, but frankly I haven’t been impressed by the Capitals in a long time, and it’s likely Jake Allen gets the start on Saturday night, which should help keep the score closer.

The Canadiens also have the advantage of youth, with their young players showing infectious energy so far this season, so they may not play as tired as a usual back-to-back with travel. I think the Canadiens keep this game close and, if you’re feeling spicy, they could even win this one.

Over 7.5 goals in Ottawa Senators vs Toronto Maple Leafs

When these two teams get together, the unexpected often happens. The Leafs have tightened up their defence quite a lot in recent years, but their goaltending remains very suspect, and the way the Senators play is very chaotic offensively, which can lead to bursts of goals.

The Leafs, of course, have one of the most potent offenses in the league, and the Senators’ defence leaves a lot to be desired. This one has all the potential to be a high-scoring affair with lots of lead changes, exactly the kind of excitement you want in October!

Calgary Flames to beat Edmonton Oilers & under 5.5 goals

Fresh off an incredibly disappointing series where the Edmonton Oilers scored at will against the Calgary Flames en route to eliminating them in a gentleman’s sweep (five games), the Flames retooled in a big way in the offseason. Out are Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, in are Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri, and McKenzie Weegar. Also in the fold is a healthy Chris Tanev, who was Calgary’s best defenceman last year but missed most of the playoffs.

The gap defensively between what the Oilers faced in the playoffs and now, with a highly-focused Darryl Sutter system looking at shutting down opposing offences, is stark. The Oilers are no pushover, but I think revenge is on the table Saturday night for the Flames.
