Oilers to beat Jets 1.76

In four games under new head coach Jay Woodcroft, the Oilers are unbeaten, winning by a combined score of 18-5. A road trip to Winnipeg may offer Edmonton their biggest test to date under the new bench, but it’s difficult to see them slowing down at this point after putting up a seven-spot on the Ducks Thursday night.

The Jets, however, have won two straight games on home ice, beating Minnesota and Seattle while scoring six and five goals, respectively. Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler in particular have been rolling pretty well with each having several recent multi-point efforts.

Winnipeg’s resurgent offense will put Edmonton’s goaltending to the test. However, between Stuart Skinner and Mike Smith, the two healthy Edmonton goaltenders have won each of their last five starts. Smith in particular looks rejuvenated after recovering from injury and getting his feet under him more.

Both clubs are in pretty desperate need of the wins when they can get them. The Oilers seem to be playing a little freer and they’re getting the saves that they need. I like their chances in this tough road contest as they continue to have new life with a new voice behind the bench in Woodcroft.

Maple Leafs to beat Blues 1.55

The Leafs played with a lot of juice against the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday in the first game with fans back in the building in over a month. The home ice advantage definitely was more evident in that game as Toronto beat Pittsburgh 4-1 behind a strong goaltending performance from Jack Campbell and two-point nights from each of Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly and Mitch Marner.

The Blues, meanwhile, are coming off of a tough 3-2 OT loss to last-place Montreal where they surrendered a late lead. This will be their third game in a four-game road swing through the Eastern Conference and their fifth game overall after the all-star break. They’re 2-1-1 so far in that span.

Toronto has won three of five games since returning from the all-star break, with Matthews continuing to score at a league-best pace of 0.75 goals per game. The team as a whole is as healthy as they’ve been all season and that win over Pittsburgh was a pretty complete performance.

This should be a good game between two very deep teams. Keep a close eye on the Blues’ goaltending plans for this game as I think Ville Husso is playing the better hockey of the two, but I still like Toronto on home ice with the way they’ve been playing.

Canucks to beat Ducks 1.62

Trade rumors continue to swirl around the Canucks, which can be a distraction, but they’ve won three of their four games coming out of the all-star break including one against Toronto and a hard-fought road win against San Jose Thursday. Vancouver will return to home ice against a Ducks squad that is licking its wounds with three straight losses coming out of the break. That includes a pair of losses in Alberta where the Ducks surrendered 13 total goals while only scoring five.

Anaheim is starting to see their comfort in the Pacific division playoff picture disrupted. They’ve had success against the Canucks earlier in the year, but Vancouver has been playing better hockey of late and did win the last meeting between the two clubs.

A big reason to like the Canucks in this one is the play of Thatcher Demko. Since December, he has been among the best goalies in the NHL with a .925 save percentage and 9-4-1 record. Also, J.T. Miller has been on fire. Since Dec. 1, he has 30 points in 25 games and has looked unstoppable. So I guess the trade talk around him isn’t getting to his head. Additionally, defenseman Quinn Hughes has 20 points in 24 games and is plus-10 in the 24 games he’s played in since Dec. 1. So things are looking up for the team as a whole.

With the Ducks sputtering here, they’re catching Vancouver at a bad time.

Flames to beat Kraken 1.33

The Flames have been, pardon the pun, on fire. Currently on an eight-game winning streak and having been off since Wednesday, Calgary is a team that should scare just about everyone at the moment. On top of that, they went out and got goal-scoring winger Tyler Toffoli from Montreal to strengthen what they already have.

Conversely, the Kraken have been one of the most frustratingly inconsistent teams in the league. They’ve lost three of their last four and gave up 11 goals over their last two losses. They’re walking into a lion’s den in this Western Canada road trip they’re on right now.

Calgary is looking like a team poised to make a deep run with how they’re constructed, how they’re coached and how well stars like Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk are playing. They’ve been one of the league’s best teams over the last month and there’s very little to suggest they’ll be slowed down by the woefully inconsistent Kraken.
