On the second last day of the NHL season, there’s still a wild amount of seeding yet to be decided, even if the playoff races themselves are settled. The Pacific Division crown is still available for Edmonton to steal from Vegas, Colorado has two games to pass Dallas for the lead in the Central Division, and New Jersey could also pass Carolina for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. On top of that, Florida could bump the Islanders down a spot in the Eastern Wild Card, and Seattle could bump Los Angeles down to the Western Wild Card with a win and loss respectively. Much will be decided tonight.

Columbus Blue Jackets to beat Pittsburgh Penguins 2.75

Having gone from nearly a guarantee of making the playoffs to completely messing that up and missing for the first time since Sidney Crosby was a rookie, the Penguins are in dire straits. To miss the playoffs due to getting beat down by one of the league’s worst teams is even worse. Do the Penguins even play their aging stars in a game that doesn’t matter?

The Blue Jackets remain one of the worst teams in recent memory, but if the Chicago Blackhawks can beat up the down and out Penguins, so can Columbus under the right circumstances. Maybe the Penguins will play hard for pride, but they look like a broken team despite their best players having good seasons.

Carolina Hurricanes to beat Florida Panthers 1.90

Having completed the incredible comeback to make the playoffs after a brutal first half of the season, the Florida Panthers don’t need to go all out in their final regular season game. They can afford to take a breath now before the real playoffs start.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, just snapped a what was a long losing streak for a team as good as they are, and likely need the confidence boost of nabbing one more win before the regular season ends. The Panthers have become a bit of a scary team heading into the playoffs, since they’ve been playing playoff hockey since the All-Star break.

Detroit Red Wings to beat Tampa Bay Lightning 2.90

Limping to the finish line would be a gracious way of describing both these teams. The Red Wings full on fell apart in the second-half of the 2022-23 NHL season, and the Tampa Bay Lightning have been a bottom-10 team for the final quarter. Both teams have controlled goals in all situations at a rate of 45 per cent the last 10 games.

Maybe the Lightning are coasting into the playoffs knowing they can flip the switch due to experience, or maybe they’re finally burnt out from three straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Final. Either way, this one is a coin toss where the payout is huge for Detroit, and it’s worth a shot.

Seattle Kraken to beat Vegas Golden Knights 2.00

It didn’t work out on Tuesday, but with the Kraken back at home this time, I’d expect a reversal of fortunes compared to the way things ended last game. Seattle have been remarkably resilient this year after a loss, and if they manage a win while the Los Angeles Kings lose, they jump from the Wild Card to third place. Funnily enough, if Edmonton also wins, the Oilers take the top spot in the division, and the Kraken face the Golden Knights in round one.

There’s a lot in flux here for the Pacific Division on the penultimate day of the NHL season, and you have to wonder who is most motivated to make their games count.
