Up until Tuesday December 13th 2002, only two players in the history of the NHL had scored 800 goals. One is nicknamed Mr. Hockey, and the other is The Great One. The phrase ‘elite company’ does not do justice to the accomplishment of Alex Ovechkin’s hat trick goal against the Chicago Blackhawks. With 800 career goals down as he chases Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894, Ovechkin has elevated himself beyond anyone’s greatest imaginations when he was drafted first overall in 2004. A truly special, literally less-than-once in a generation event for the sport.
Montreal Canadiens to beat Anaheim Ducks 2.00
Even though the Canadiens are on the second-half of a back-to-back set, this is a game that should be relatively tough to lose overall. With Cole Caufield escaping a scary, accidental collision without a significant injury, he should be extra excited to play against his old buddy Trevor Zegras.
While the Canadiens are by no means a great team, or even a good one if you look at the underlying numbers, the Ducks are a special breed of bad. They have just one regulation win this season in 30 games, which is hard to fathom.
Alex Ovechkin to score anytime vs Dallas Stars 2.00
What is there left to say about Alex Ovechkin? The man is on an absolute tear with seven goals in his last four games, 20 in 31 games, at the age of 37. He’s been an absolute joy to watch for each of his 1452 games in the regular season and playoffs, and he’s going to break the NHL’s long standing goal record held by Wayne Gretzky.
New Jersey Devils to beat Philadelphia Flyers 1.57
The goaltending has fallen apart and for the first time this season, the New Jersey Devils have lost three straight, including two to divisional rivals across the state border. Against another divisional opponent though, the Devils are about to get back on track.
The Flyers remain a team in shambles, injured beyond a respectable roster, and not good even if their roster was healthy. The Devils may have lost three straight, but remain the class of the NHL at even strength, which is a surprise to everyone, probably even themselves.
Buffalo Sabres to beat Colorado Avalanche 3.20
The Avalanche have been doing an admirable job of holding the fort with all the injuries to key players that they’ve suffered, but the Buffalo Sabres have been playing better hockey and aren’t a team to take lightly anymore.
The Avs’ first line looks good enough with Mikko Rantanen shifted to centre, and the defence remains strong, but the other forward lines look highly exploitable for any team with some scoring punch, and Buffalo has that in spades.
