Maple Leafs to beat Penguins

The Penguins have surged out of the All-Star break with four straight wins, the last of which was a dramatic comeback victory to beat the Philadelphia Flyers on the same night Sidney Crosby scored his 500th NHL goal. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs have won three of their five games in the month of February.

The Leafs are also returning to Toronto where they will be allowed to have fans in the building for the first time in about six weeks. Ontario’s capacity limits have been raised to 50 per cent, so there will be more energy in Scotiabank Arena than there has been in some time. That should help provide a little extra boost to the home side.

The Penguins won the previous two meetings between these two clubs, 7-1 in October and 2-0 in November. Both clubs have been surging down the stretch of the season and certainly should view this as a big game. It’s a big game as far as the rest of the NHL is concerned as well as this will be a matchup between two teams that rank in the top six when it comes to points percentage as both are over the .700 mark in this department.

Toronto has needed better goaltending of late, but I think with fans in the building, with an extra day of rest and a chance to be back at home after playing a large chunk of their road schedule in the last six weeks will end up making up the difference as Toronto gets themselves rolling again.

Sabres to beat Senators

For the first time since leaving in free agency, Ottawa Senators legend Craig Anderson will meet his former team as he is expected to start for the Sabres. Anderson has only appeared in nine games, but he’s won six of those starts and has a .916 save percentage. He should be pretty fired up, but more importantly, the Sabres have looked good in their most recent games, which includes a 5-3 win over Montreal and a 6-3 win against the New York Islanders.

The Sabres have been buzzing a little bit of late, especially with new addition Alex Tuch coming in and scoring with consistency and Jeff Skinner still playing at an all-star level. Ottawa, meanwhile, has struggled to stay consistent with a lineup that has been depleted by injury. They won their first two games after the break and then lost three of the next four while struggling to score.

This is not exactly a battle of two titans here, but I think the Sabres provide a little value among favorites on Thursday’s slate. They’ve looked like a different team since Tuch arrived and I think they can take advantage of home ice as well.

Kraken to beat Jets

The Jets haven’t strung consecutive wins together since early January and are on the second half of a back-to-back after an emotional 6-3 win over their budding rivals, the Minnesota Wild. Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler each had four points in the game and Winnipeg started to look more like its old self.

Unfortunately, the Jets have not been very good in back-to-backs this year. That represents an opportunity to get some good value on the Kraken, a team that can’t seem to get out of its own way at times. This is probably the riskiest play of the games I’ve picked today, but I just haven’t been able to trust the Jets in back-to-backs.

The Kraken have won two of their last four games, both of which were on the road. They’ve gotten some decent goaltending of late from Philipp Grubauer, who has struggled much of the rest of the year. I think they might have just enough to catch Winnipeg in a bit of a schedule loss situation.

Canucks to beat Sharks

The Canucks have had four days between games since their confidence-boosting 3-2 win over Toronto on home ice. Now they travel for a tough road game in San Jose, but I’ve liked the way Vancouver has played lately. It hasn’t been consistent, but they’ve been competitive in just about every game with four wins over their last seven.

The Sharks, meanwhile, have lost four straight and are coming off of a disappointing 3-0 defeat to the Edmonton Oilers on home ice. They’ve had a few days to lick their wounds and should come into this game fresh as that game against Edmonton was their first since the break.

Vancouver has won two of their first three games after the break and had four days without a game before traveling for this quick trip to San Jose. The Canucks have a goaltending advantage and they’ve had players like J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson really clicking of late. I like the Canucks on the road in this one.
