Welcome back from the holidays! Hopefully you enjoyed some relaxing time with your family and friends, recharging your batteries before heading into the new year. With a few days left in 2022, let’s do our best to squeeze all the value possible out of this year.
Florida Panthers to beat Montreal Canadiens
These two teams have been struggling lately, to put it mildly. With just three wins each in their last 10, they have nearly identical records. That is actually great news for the Canadiens, because they own the Panthers’ unprotected 1st-round draft pick this season.
While on the surface these two teams look equally inept, diving deeper reveals a huge divide. In terms of expected goals for percentage, the Florida Panthers rank sixth in the league at 5-vs-5 and ninth in all situations, whereas the Canadiens rank 27th and 30th respectively.
The Canadiens have been propped up by their goaltending and elite first-line finishing, while the Panthers have seen both goaltending and shooting underperform. It makes sense to bet on the better team.
Tage Thompson (Buffalo Sabres) to score 2+ points vs Detroit Red Wings
In what will be an incredibly important game as the showdown for the wildcard spots in the East starts to get really close, the Buffalo Sabres need their best player to stand up and take command in a contest that could have huge implications late in the season.
Luckily for them, it’s been a rarity this season for Tage Thompson to not do something amazing. With 50 points in 32 games, including 26 goals, Thompson has become a superstar in this league, and is a human highlight reel matched by very few players. Thompson has scored multiple points in over one third of his games this season.
Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa Senators) to score anytime vs Washington Capitals
As great as Brady Tkachuk has been this season, and he has been great, he’s still scoring way below expectations based on the shots he takes, which is something that has plagued him his entire career. Is Brady just a bad finisher? He’s certainly not an elite finisher, but I don’t think the gap between his true talent and his raw inputs is so large.
So far this season, Tkachuk has accumulated 22.23 expected goals in all situations and scored just 13 times. That tally is nothing to scoff at, in fact it’s a career high pace for him, but he’s clearly capable of finishing even more.
Joe Pavelski (Dallas Stars) to score anytime vs Minnesota Wild
The ageless Pavelski is part of one of the best lines in the NHL at the age of 38 alongside Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson, but he’s been pretty unlucky from a finishing perspective in December.
With just one goal in that time, Pavelski has been the setup man instead with nine assists, but he’s also accumulated 4.54 expected goals in December according to Evolving Hockey, which means he’s due to get at least another goal during this stretch.
With Pavelski’s history of consistency, it’s only a matter of time until he starts scoring again.
