Is NHL hockey experiencing yet another skill renaissance? It doesn’t feel like that long ago that players like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Auston Matthews burst onto the scene and took over the NHL’s scoring leaderboard. Now, young players like Jack Hughes and Jason Robertson, and a late bloomer in Tage Thompson, have forced themselves into not only the top-10 in scoring across the NHL, but into MVP conversations. Whether the production those players are putting up is sustainable or not, one thing is for sure, it’s incredibly entertaining.

Jack Hughes (New Jersey Devils) to score anytime vs Carolina Hurricanes

Right now, there’s simply no denying Jack Hughes. He’s arguably the hottest player in the entire NHL, and easily the straw that stirs the drink for the playoff-bound New Jersey Devils.

Against a tightly organized team like the Hurricanes, you need your stars to find ways through, and Hughes is that guy. He has 14 goals in 17 games since the start of December.

Calgary Flames to beat St. Louis Blues

Not much has gone as planned for the Calgary Flames this season. Unexpected roster turnover and poor goaltending has thrown a wrench it what was supposed to be another dominant season, but overall the underlying numbers remain strong under Darryl Sutter’s coaching. Add in the fact that they dropped their last game to the lowly Blackhawks, and I’d bet they come out with some panache.

The Blues, meanwhile, are in a similar situation to the Flames on the surface, but if you dig deeper you can see that they drastically overachieved last season, and this season they sit in the bottom third of all teams in even-strength play, but they aren’t getting the puck luck they did last year. Both teams have uninspiring goaltending at the moment, but the Flames should be the victors here.

Erik Karlsson (San Jose Sharks) to score 2+ points vs Arizona Coyotes

You would think that after the ridiculous start to the season that Erik Karlsson had, he would have slowed down a little, but he hasn’t. Still among the scoring leaders across the NHL, the veteran blueliner has 22 points in his last 15 games for the San Jose Sharks. Sure, the goal scoring has tailed off a little bit, but he’s made up for it with incredible playmaking.

Karlsson sits in a tie for third in the NHL in primary assists among all skaters, leads all defencemen in points and primary points by a whopping nine just halfway through the year. Those troubles with his ankle sure seem behind him.

Colorado Avalanche to beat Florida Panthers

Now that Nathan MacKinnon is back, Mikko Rantanen can relax just a little bit. It sure seemed like he was carrying the Avalanche through the season, the lone offensive threat among their forward group with all their injuries. Despite injury issues though, the Avalanche have remained respectable, and have a strong record to build off of in the second half of the season.

The same can’t be said for the Florida Panthers, who remain under .500 and uninspiring to say the least. They’re especially weak on the road, where they’ve lost 14 of their 22 games, and they are hoping to chase down a playoff spot with one of the toughest second half schedules in the league. It’s not looking great, and the first of 41 more hurdles is the reigning Stanley Cup champ.
