The beginning of a season can be unpredictable and every streak, whether it be hot or cold, looms large. No team recognizes this more than the Calgary Flames, who opened the 2022-23 season on a blistering pace, defeating legitimate cup contenders nearly every game with a 5-1-0 record, only to fall apart and lose seven straight. After finally getting a win on Saturday, they look well positioned to vault up the Pacific division standings once again, signalling just how quickly a bad stretch can be erased in the early season, a lesson for players, teams, and bettors alike.

Jason Robertson (Dallas Stars) to score anytime vs Tampa Bay Lightning

After a bit of a slow start, Robertson is another example of why patience with promise will pay off. With just two goals after seven games, Robertson was still scoring at a fine pace for a top-six forward, but not anywhere near the clip he managed last season. Eight games later he’s added eight goals to that total, while keeping his playmaking strong as well, with eight assists.

The 23-year-old has gone from a promising rookie to a top-line forward as a sophomore, and now seems poised to be the franchise player the Dallas Stars need to be competitive.

Cole Caufield (Montreal Canadiens) over 3.5 shots vs New Jersey Devils

While he scored a bit of a flukey goal in his last outing, it’s actually been a bit of a cold streak for Cole Caufield of late, compared to what we’re used to under Martin St. Louis at least. With two goals in his last six, Caufield’s chances at scoring 50 this season look slimmer, but it’s not for lack of chances or effort.

Caufield has been a consistent offensive threat through that cold streak, registering 29 shots, and failing to get four or more in a game just once. Averaging nearly five shots per game is a great way to get some goals, but even if he doesn’t score, there’s value in those shots.

Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs) to score anytime vs Pittsburgh Penguins

After a stretch of five goals in five games, Matthews went cold again for three games, two of which the Leafs lost. Matthews finally lit the lamp again against the Canucks in a comeback win for the Leafs.

Perhaps this season will be one where Matthews scores in bursts instead of every game like the last couple? If so, be keyed in on the first time he scores after a little slump, and bet on him to put the puck in every game until he doesn’t.

Vancouver Canucks to beat Buffalo Sabres

The Vancouver Canucks have been where the Sabres are now. Heck, so has almost every Sabres team of the last decade. Down in the doldrums, everything going against them, losers of five straight. The Canucks still haven’t truly rebounded from their horrid start, but they’ve been better of late, and found some wins along the way.

Against a team as embattled as they were to start the season, a team who are desperate to finally get out of the basement, there are usually mistakes to capitalize on from players taking shortcuts to achieve their goals. That’s something the Canucks can take advantage of.
