On Tuesday night, two Canadian clubs go looking for their first wins of the season. The Ottawa Senators face an uphill battle against the undefeated Boston Bruins, while the Vancouver Canucks take on the winless Columbus Blue Jackets, who have also lost Patrik Laine to injury. Will one or both finally put a notch in the W column?
Ottawa Senators (+1.5) vs Boston Bruins 1.36
Unfortunately for the Senators, I don’t think this is the game that they grab their first win of the season. The Bruins are once again looking like one of the top teams in the league, although I do think this is the game where the offence finally starts to click for the Sens.
Held to just three goals in two games, there were a few times in their last outing where the Alex DeBrincat one-timer was available and they just couldn’t connect. Tim Stutzle looks as slippery and dangerous as ever, and Claude Giroux remains ageless. I think they keep this one close.
Alex DeBrincat (Ottawa Senators) to score anytime vs Boston Bruins 2.87
A proven, prolific scorer even on bad teams, DeBrincat has hit 41 goals twice in his career, and 32 in just 52 games in the Covid-shortened 2021-22 season. Through two games so far this season, he has nine shots on goal, and hasn’t tickled twine yet.
The opportunities are there, but they just haven’t gone his way yet. That should change soon, and it’s never a bad idea to bet on a high-end goalscorer to bust a goal drought when they’re getting lots of looks every game.
Steven Stamkos (Tampa Bay Lightning) to score anytime vs Philadelphia Flyers 2.10
Speaking of prolific scorers, Stamkos has been so good for so long that it almost went unnoticed that he put up 42 goals and 106 points last year. The captain of the Lightning is up to more of the same so far in 2022-23, scoring four times in three games for the Bolts and rattling off a whopping 16 shots.
Stamkos has dealt with some injury issues and missed loads of time in his career, but would you have guessed that over the previous four seasons he has averaged just over 42 goals per 82 games played? He’ll hit his 500th career goal this season, and it likely won’t take him long - he only needs 15 more.
Calgary Flames to beat Vegas Golden Knights 1.65
Two undefeated teams clash as the Flames take on the Golden Knights, and both teams have been full value for their wins this season, each controlling over 54 per cent of the shot attempts and over 60 per cent of the expected goals at even strength.
However, the Flames do have something the Golden Knights don’t - a reliable goaltender. I know that Logan Thompson has been great so far, and frankly his numbers are better than what Jacob Markstrom showed in his first start, but shutting out this year’s Chicago Blackhawks doesn’t mean a lot, especially contrasted with Markstrom playing the Avalanche.
