Tuesday marks two weeks since the 2022-23 NHL season began, and already there are storylines worth keeping a close eye on, like Sidney Crosby going toe-to-toe with Connor McDavid for point production despite playing six fewer minutes per game. Can the 35-year-old Crosby keep that pace all year? Or, on the more negative slant, can the Arizona Coyotes truly be this bad all year long? With 10 games on the docket, it’s an action-packed Tuesday night in the NHL to help us answer these questions and more.

Mats Zuccarello (Minnesota Wild) to score 2+ points vs Montreal Canadiens

On a tear to start the season while his team is losing mostly due to goaltending issues, Zuccarello has another ripe opportunity to pile up points against the Montreal Canadiens, who rank fifth-worst in the NHL in all situations by expected goals against per 60 minutes.

Zuccarello has been a force on the powerplay this season, leading the NHL with seven points in only five games. By expected goals against, the Canadiens have the fourth-worst penalty kill in the NHL, though they’ve given up just half as many goals as expected so far.

Have their goaltenders been amazing, or are they due for a wakeup call?

Cole Caufield (Montreal Canadiens) to score anytime & have 3+ shots  vs Minnesota Wild

All of Caufield’s offence this season has come at even strength, and while the Wild are functionally decent defensively, the goaltending has been letting them down.

Against the Dallas Stars, Caufield and his line struggled to create much offence overall, but they’ve been the driving force for the Canadiens so far this season, and he’ll likely get many opportunities to light the lamp after an off night, as no one seems to be more invested in his success than head coach Martin St. Louis.

The Wild also are giving up the sixth-most shots against per 60 minutes in all situations in the league at 34.3, so expect Caufield to be ripping a bunch of shots on net.

New Jersey Devils to beat Detroit Red Wings

It was a rough start for the Devils, with players openly complaining about being tired of losing, but even while they were winless after two games, under the hood things looked really solid.

Shockingly, after being pretty mediocre to bad last season, the Devils have the top expected goals for percentage in the league right now at 65.27 per cent in all situations, over five percentage points higher than second-place Boston.

The Red Wings have been red-hot to start the season, and haven’t lost in regulation yet at all, but the Devils have looked like a force out there. Now that they’re rattling off wins, it probably won’t stop unless their play drops off quite a bit.

Rasmus Dahlin (Buffalo Sabres) to score anytime vs Seattle Kraken

The Buffalo Sabres are doing that thing they do sometimes and have started the season scorching hot. Can they actually maintain it this time and push for a playoff spot? Nobody knows for sure, but what we do know is that Rasmus Dahlin broke the NHL record for longest goal streak to start a season for a defenceman.

Against a team like Seattle that gives up nearly a goal per game more than expected, it’s a good bet that Dahlin will extend that streak at least another game.
