We’re nearly halfway through the 2022-23 season, and we’re beginning to see some clarity between the haves and have nots.
Last season, the big gap was in the Eastern Conference, where the top eight teams were already essentially decided by this point. This season, it's looking like the top nine in each conference are gaining separation. Four and five points between ninth and 10th place in the West and East respectively may not seem like much, but with three and four teams respectively still in the fight behind each ninth-placed team, even two wins will be tough to outpace so many teams by.
Can the new year be a clean slate for players and teams who desperately need it? I guess we’ll find out.
Arizona Coyotes to beat Florida Panthers
It’s been a fun stretch of strong play by the Coyotes, who refuse to full-on tank despite having a roster built to do it. Huge amounts of respect for those players giving their all every night, and their arrival in South Florida is very interesting in terms of timing.
Handing the embattled Canadiens a drubbing could have been a turning point for the Panthers, but immediately after gaining a bit of momentum, they lost two straight to teams in playoff positions by a combined score of 9-3. This is a sloppy team that’s lacking in confidence, ripe for a team like Arizona to upset.
Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa Senators) to score anytime vs Columbus Blue Jackets
The NHL’s leader in expected goals is scoreless in his last eight straight games, despite notching 33 shots on goal over that time. Tkachuk is a below average finisher despite his gaudy expected goals numbers, but he’s not this below average.
He is more than due to break this goalscoring slump, and facing a team like the Columbus Blue Jackets gives him a great opportunity.
Nashville Predators to beat Montreal Canadiens
There’s no way you should be betting on the Montreal Canadiens to win right now. The spiral they’re in defensively has been a sight to behold. Allowing 20 goals in their previous three games, they’ve been utterly dominated in each one and are battling through a bevy of injuries too.
The Predators are by no means a great team at the moment, but facing a team lacking confidence so severely like the Canadiens are is a huge opportunity as they look to get back in the playoff picture.
Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers) to score 2+ points vs Seattle Kraken
Having just seen his 17-game point streak ended at home by Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets, McDavid must be thinking back fondly on the previous game the Oilers played, also against the Seattle Kraken, where he notched five points.
All told, the NHL’s best player notched 37 points on his 17-game point streak, 10 more than anyone else in the NHL over that time. He leads the league in points with 72, 15 more than the closest NHLer, his partner in crime Leon Draisaitl.
