While most of the intriguing matchups around the NHL these days are surrounding the Wild Card spots still available in the Western and Eastern Conferences, don’t sleep on a couple of the races for the top spot in the division. The Bruins have the Atlantic and the Presidents’ Trophy locked up, but the other three divisions are extremely close in spots one through three, with home ice advantage up for grabs.
Buffalo Sabres to beat Florida Panthers
Just when you thought the Buffalo Sabres might be out of the running for the playoffs, superstar goaltending prospect Devon Levi graduates from the NCAA and jumps straight into the NHL, debuting with a win and a .939 save percentage. Both the Sabres and Panthers are on modest winning streaks as they battle for the final spots in the Eastern Conference Wild Card race.
The Panthers have been playing great hockey lately, and are finally seeing their shooting luck align with the expected goals they create as one of the most offensively dynamic teams in the NHL, but one thing they don’t have is goaltending. Buffalo has a strong offence as well, but with Levi in net on top of that, they should be a tough match for Florida.
Pittsburgh Penguins to beat New Jersey Devils
Are the Penguins on the same level as the Devils this year? I don’t believe so. There are too many glaring issues with the Penguins to put them on that pedestal, but they have to win this game. It’s an incredibly tough matchup, but the Penguins cannot afford excuses or failure anymore this season.
New Jersey is in a bit of a lull right now having won only four of their last 10 games, just like the Penguins, but while the Devils are secure in their playoff spot, the Penguins are still fighting for their lives in the Wild Card race. They simply need this one way more than the Devils do.
Chicago Blackhawks to beat Calgary Flames
As I said last week, the Flames and I have trust issues. Winners of four straight as they’re fully in crunch time to sneak into the playoffs, it seems like the Flames have finally got serious about making something of this season. The Flames are also far stronger at home than on the road.
On the flip side, the Blackhawks are losers of eight straight, pushing the envelope in their tanking effort to grab Connor Bedard this summer. However, the Blackhawks have beaten the Flames twice this season, and the Flames seem to relish losing games that they absolutely shouldn't. I think this one is worth a little risk.
Connor McDavid & Leon Draisaitl (Edmonton Oilers) both to score 1+ goals vs Los Angeles Kings
The Oilers are scorching hot in the stretch run to the playoffs, vaulting out of the Wild Card race and into the race for the top spot in the Pacific Division with a 9-0-1 record in their last 10 games.
While a lot of that success has been due to the increased depth the Oilers have this year, the primary reason remains the two-headed dragon they have in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, something no team can compete with. Against a very tough team like the LA Kings, both superstars will have to contribute for a win.
