Fresh from the NHL’s All-Star break, players nursing minor injuries have had a bit of time to recover, and everyone got a little rest. Even the players who went to the All-Star Weekend festivities weren’t putting in real effort.
Which teams will come out of the break rested and refreshed, and which ones will be a little derailed by taking time off while they were on a roll? We’ll find out shortly.
Tampa Bay Lightning to beat San Jose Sharks 1.40
On the second-half of a back-to-back set after battling with their cross-state rivals, the Florida Panthers, the Lightning welcome the San Jose Sharks to Tampa Bay. The Sharks are a way better team than their record indicates, sitting eighth in the NHL in expected goals for percentage at 5-vs-5 this season, just behind Tampa Bay, but while they’ve scored at the expected pace, they’ve allowed goals against at a far higher rate.
San Jose’s goaltending at even strength is the worst in the league, and against a team that attacks with every line in a multitude of different ways like Tampa, it’s unlikely to hold up.
Edmonton Oilers to beat Detroit Red Wings 1.60
Red-hot heading into the All-Star break, the Oilers’ big guns were present at the festivities in Florida, with Connor McDavid going four-for-four in under 10 seconds in the accuracy shooting, before connecting with Leon Draisaitl for a goal in the actual game. Stuart Skinner didn’t look too out of place either.
Dylan Larkin was arguably as worthy an MVP candidate as Matthew Tkachuk, with a five-goal, one-assist outing to help secure the Atlantic Division’s victory. A red-hot Larkin probably isn’t enough to make up for the gap between these two teams, though. The Oilers are fighting to secure a playoff spot out West, while the Red Wings are just trying to stay out of the basement.
Vegas Golden Knights to beat Nashville Predators 2.00
If there was any team that needed the All-Star break, it was the Vegas Golden Knights. After a brilliant first quarter of the season or so where they were the best team in the Western Conference, things started to look similar to last season. Players getting hurt, wins turning to losses, despair setting in.
Just 2-6-2 over their last 10, Vegas should not be the favourites as they take the ice in Nashville, but a little rest for the weary and the prospect of a healthy Mark Stone returning to the lineup soon should give Vegas the recharge they need to get through this one.
Bo Horvat to score a powerplay goal vs Seattle Kraken
In his second game with the Islanders after being traded for and signing a massive contract, New York faces an uphill battle against one of the best teams in the West on the second-half of a back-to-back set. With a game already in the books to get used to his new mates, there’s a good chance Horvat is going to spark the Islanders’ abysmal powerplay.
The Islanders literally have the worst powerplay in the league, but Seattle has the second-to-worst penalty kill, and Bo Horvat’s 24 powerplay goals over the last two seasons are tied for 10th-most in the NHL over that span. With a shifty player like Mat Barzal feeding him, there could be some magic to be had.
