Winnipeg Jets to beat Toronto Maple Leafs 2.15
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ run of good luck on the goaltending front has seemingly run out. With losses in five consecutive games, including an embarrassing sweep at the hands of a Vancouver Canucks squad coming off a COVID-19 outbreak, things are looking a little bleak at the moment.
They've managed to beat Winnipeg four times this season, but this has been a really tight series overall. They’ve played each other tough all year, with Toronto going 4-2-0 including a pair of OT wins. The Jets won the last meeting between the two clubs, though, earning a 5-2 win.
Jack Campbell is expected to start for the Maple Leafs on Thursday night. After winning his first 11 starts, Campbell has been in net for three straight losses and was yanked early from that game against Winnipeg. That was Campbell’s first loss in three tries against the Jets, but it was a pretty rough one.
Toronto is going to stop the bleeding on this current losing streak, but I don’t think it happens tonight.
Vancouver Canucks to beat Ottawa Senators 1.71
Picking up a pair of wins over the Maple Leafs after three weeks off and a lot of players being sick with COVID-19, the Canucks have suddenly vaulted themselves back into the playoff conversation.
They have a lot of ground to make up, but a pair of home games against Ottawa could help get them a little closer if they are able to keep doing what they have been all year against the Senators. Vancouver is 5-0-0 against Ottawa this season, while outscoring the Sens 22-7 in those five contests.
With five games in hand, the Canucks need to stack wins as much as they can to try to close the gap between them and Montreal.
After such a dominant performance over Toronto in their most recent win, it’s hard to see the Senators coming in and walking out with any points, let alone two.
Colorado Avalanche to beat St. Louis Blues 1.58
The Avs have been going through some COVID protocol issues and will be without Mikko Rantanen when they take on the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night. Before having to pause, the Avs had won four straight and nine of their last 10 games. This is a team absolutely rolling.
We’ll have to see if they can maintain the momentum. The Blues have not offered a ton of resistance to the Avs this season - Colorado is 4-1-0 in the series while outscoring St. Louis 18-10. Four of those five games did come on home ice and the Avs are about to play three straight in St. Louis.
Colorado has been the NHL’s best road team in terms of points percentage, going 12-5-2 away from home this season. They also picked up a 4-3 win over St. Louis on the road in their last game before having to pause for protocols.
Considering that a good chunk of the Avs are healthy and they’ve had seven days off between games, I think the rest will have proven more helpful than harmful.
Florida Panthers to beat Carolina Hurricanes 2.10
The value on the Panthers in this game is very tempting, even though the Hurricanes have looked really good lately. The Panthers have won four of their last five games and have looked really good in the process.
Their trade deadline acquisitions like Sam Bennett and Brandon Montour have fit in well and the team continues to weather the storm that Aaron Ekblad’s season-ending injury could have caused.
Carolina has had Florida’s number this year, which is why I make this pick with some trepidation. The Hurricanes are 5-0-1 in the season series with a 23-13 cumulative score.
Sergei Bobrovsky, who will get the start for Florida tonight, has only appeared in two of those games, going 0-1-1 with a .910 save percentage.
This one is just me going off of what I’ve seen out of the Panthers in the last few games I’ve watched them. They’ve got great structure and they can absolute blow by teams. Carolina is very similar in that way, but I think the Panthers are playing just a little bit better and I like them at home, where they are 16-4-3.
