Columbus Blue Jackets to beat Florida Panthers
With the Pierre-Luc Dubois debacle behind them, the Blue Jackets may not be a better team - at least not until Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic can join them - but at least they’re a united front.
Focused on a common goal, the Blue Jackets face an undefeated Panthers squad. Florida, though, haven’t played in a full week, and winning their first two games was more good luck than good play from the Panthers.
Buffalo Sabres to beat New York Rangers
The Sabres made some big moves in the offseason to bring in some talented players to surround Jack Eichel and help the team move forward. It hasn’t shown in the standings yet, with the Sabres posting a lacklustre 2-3-1 record, but they’ve gone from one of the league’s worst even strength teams to posting the league’s sixth-best Corsi for percentage, and third-best expected goals for percentage.
The Rangers have played better than their record as well, but the Sabres have been the much stronger team so far this season. If the Sabres keep doing what they’re doing, the wins are going to come along.
Colorado Avalanche to beat San Jose Sharks
For a Stanley Cup favourite, it hasn’t been the start to the season that most expected for the Colorado Avalanche. They've dropped games against lower tier teams like the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks, splitting every back-to-back series so far. Still, they’ve played quality hockey.
The Avalanche are tuning teams up to the point where their expected goals for percentage at 5-vs-5 is over 55 per cent, but they’ve only scored at 42 per cent so far. That’s going to turn around, and another weak opponent like the Sharks is a great way to start.
Dallas Stars to beat Detroit Red Wings
After having the start of their season delayed due to positive COVID-19 cases, the Stars have entered the fray like they were shot out of a cannon. Unfortunately, most of that hot start has come on special teams - they’ve actually been outplayed at evens - but a hot start is a hot start.
Including special teams, the Stars have still controlled play by a thin margin, and should keep their strong start going against the worst even strength team in the league.
