Toronto Maple Leafs to beat Winnipeg Jets 

Toronto is coming off of its first series sweep of the season at the hands of the previously-struggling Canucks. It’s only the second time they’ve sustained back-to-back losses all season. It’s hard to see them falling a third time.

That said, Winnipeg offers a tough opponent with typically strong goaltending and some speed up front to fight Toronto’s fire with fire. The Jets, however, have had two days to stew over a big loss to the Montreal Canadiens in which they allowed a season-high seven goals against.

With both teams getting two days off, they should be about as fresh as they can get in this condensed season. That’s why I have to give a slight edge to the home Maple Leafs.

Toronto is one of the league’s top home teams at 9-3-1, while Winnipeg is middle of the pack when it comes to playing on the road at 6-4-0.

Given the nature of the North Division, it’s been a while since the Jets have taken on a top-tier team like Toronto, which is why I think they may stumble in the first of a three-game set.

Pittsburgh Penguins to beat New York Rangers 

The Rangers have shown some improvement in recent weeks, winning close games against top teams and beating the teams they’re supposed to, but they ran into a Penguins team that was well prepared to blow the barn doors off of them - Pittsburgh won 5-1 on Sunday and have won three of their last four games.

Winners of four of the five games they’ve played against each other, Pittsburgh has just been better than the Rangers almost every time out.

Evgeni Malkin has been one of the top performers for Pittsburgh in games against the Rangers, with a goal and five assists in the five contests between the two sides.

With Rangers rookie starter Igor Shesterkin likely sidelined with an injury, that would put Alexander Gerogiev in net against the Pens. He is 0-1-1 against Pittsburgh in his two starts and has a paltry .818 save percentage in those games with eight goals against.

With Pittsburgh on home ice - where they are 10-2-0 - the recipe exists for another Penguins win.

Philadelphia Flyers to beat Buffalo Sabres 

Rock bottom doesn’t seem to exist for the Sabres, who are 6-14-3 and in the midst of a seven-game losing streak. One of those six wins have come against the Flyers, who they’ll play in a one-game road set on Tuesday night.

Philly has been a little inconsistent, though, so the Sabres might have a chance to pounce if the Flyers have one of their off games, but I don’t see that happening. Philadelphia has lost each of its last two games, but has not had a losing streak longer than two all season.

With a 3-1-0 record against the Sabres, including back-to-back shutouts in their last two meetings, it’s hard to see a let down coming from the Flyers.

Carter Hart will be the goalie for Philadelphia, and while he was in between the pipes for the Flyers’ only loss to the Sabres, his last start against Buffalo saw him make 28 saves for the shutout. He has not been at his best this year, but Hart could certainly build some more confidence against the anaemic Sabres offense.

Washington Capitals to beat New Jersey Devils 

The Devils have often provided some nice value picks in bets with some surprising wins over the course of the year. One team they haven’t figured out, however, is the Washington Capitals. New Jersey has lost all three matchups between the two sides.

Even though the Devils picked up a confidence-boosting 1-0 win over Boston on Sunday, they’ve still lost eight of their last 10 games.

Another thing that hurts the Devils’ chances is the continued absence of Nico Hischier. He’s only been able to play in five games so far this season due to a preseason injury being followed by another injury. Losing him really hurts the depth of the club, even though others like Pavel Zacha and Jack Hughes have stepped up their games this season. 

As for Washington, they’ll be without Tom Wilson who remains suspended, but they’re also coming off a very strong win over the Flyers on Sunday. Ilya Samsonov returned between the pipes after a prolonged absence. He may get the nod on Tuesday.

Additionally, Alexander Ovechkin scored his third goal in his last eight games. In previous years, Ovechkin would usually end such dry spells with a flurry of goals. That hasn’t happened as much this season, but he has scored two goals against the Devils already, so it might be worth looking for Ovechkin-to-score props.
