For the first time this postseason, a team will be facing elimination from the playoffs. The Carolina Hurricanes have put the New York Islanders up against the ropes and pounded away to a 3-1 series lead after four games. They now have the opportunity to knock the Islanders out while on home ice in Raliegh. Can they do it? We’ll find out tonight
New York Islanders to beat Carolina Hurricanes
For a series where one team has a 3-1 lead, the actual play on the ice isn’t that tilted. The Hurricanes’ have only outscored the Islanders 12-11 through four games, though the last two games had a lot more separation than the first two.
The Hurricanes have controlled shot volume so far, leading the series in shot attempts, unblocked shot attempts, and shots on goal, while the Islanders have produced more scoring chances, more high danger scoring chances and, due to those factors, have an edge in expected goals as well. I just don’t think the Islanders are ready to go quietly.
Anders Lee to score anytime vs Carolina Hurricanes
The Islanders captain has just one point in four games so far in this series, despite the fact that on balance the Islanders have played the Hurricanes pretty well, outscoring them at even strength and controlling the expected goals in all situations.
It’s not for lack of trying either, Lee leads the series in expected goals with 2.47, which is the fourth-best mark in the playoffs overall. With his team facing elimination, it’s more important than ever for the captain to step up.
Wyatt Johnston to score anytime vs Minnesota Wild
When we talk about players who are due, no one fits that mould so far in the playoffs as well as Dallas Stars forward Wyatt Johnston. The Stars' first-round pick in 2021 has already made a big impact in the NHL as a 19-year-old rookie, scoring 24 goals this season at a pace of half a point per game.
In this series, he’s playing big minutes and putting shots on net, and he was especially effective in Dallas, where the series shifts back to tonight. A 15 per cent shooter in the regular season, Johnston has already racked up 2.01 expected goals in the postseason, with no actual goals to his name. He’s a great longshot bet for a Game 5 difference-maker.
Leon Draistaitl to score 2+ power play points vs Los Angeles Kings
The Oilers have had issues drawing penalties in this series, but when they get an opportunity, they are unbelievably lethal, scoring nearly 55 per cent of the time. Draisaitl has been the key to that, with his incredible playmaking combining with the best one-timer on the team to make him almost impossible to defend.
Should the Oilers draw a few powerplays out of the Kings in this one, Draisaitl will continue to cement himself as both one of the best powerplay players ever, and one of the strongest playoff performers in NHL history.
