GOALS

The player with the most goals in NHL history is Wayne Gretzky.

Nicknamed ‘The Great One’, Gretzky scored 894 goals at a rate of 0.601 per game in his career while playing for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers.

Behind Gretzky on 801 goals is Gordie Howe, who played for the Detroit Red Wings between 1946 and 1971.

Howe played 1,767 games in the NHL – 280 more than Gretzky – and scored 0.453 goals per game.

In third place is Jaromir Jagr, who last played in the NHL in 2018 and is now with HC Kladno in his native Czech Republic.

Jagr scored 766 goals in 1,733 games in the NHL at a rate of 0.442 per game while playing for nine different teams.

Fourth in the goal-scoring table is Brett Hull, who netted 741 goals in 1,269 games, meaning his goals per game average sits just behind Gretzky at 0.584.

Hull played for five NHL teams and is most famous for his time with the St. Louis Blues between 1987 and 1998.

Rounding out the top five is Marcel Dionne, who played for the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers.

Dionne scored 731 career goals in 1,348 games at a rate of 0.542 per game.

The top active goalscorer in the NHL at present is Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.

At the time of writing, Ovechkin has scored 707 goals in the NHL in 1,156 games. His rate of 0.612 goals per game is even higher than Gretzky’s.

POINTS

In the NHL, a point is awarded to a player for a goal or assist.

The player with the most points in NHL history is, unsurprisingly, Gretzky, who accrued an incredible 2,857 in his 1,487-game career.

Gretzky’s average of 1.921 points per game is the highest in history, and he’s earned 936 points more than any other player.

Ranked second in career points is Jagr, who earned 1,921 across 1,733 career games. Jagr averaged 1.11 points per game.

Third in the table is Mark Messier, with 1,887 points, just ahead of Gordie Howe on 1,850.

Ron Francis is in fifth place with 1,798 points from 1,731 games at an average of 1.04.

The top active points scorer in the NHL is Joe Thornton of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In a 26-year career in which he has also played for the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks, Thornton has scored 1,511 points in 1,641 games, at a rate of 0.921 points per game.
