The favourites

When one member of the field has won 13 French Open titles, only failing to win three since 2004, then it becomes almost impossible to tip up anybody else.

Rafael Nadal is by some distance the greatest player in this competition’s history and so unsurprisingly goes into the 2021 competition as favourite.

The Spaniard’s form is excellent, too.

He has won two of the last three clay events, the Barcelona Open and Italian Open, including victory over Novak Djokovic in the final of the latter.

It would be a major surprise if he is not collecting No. 14 in a fortnight’s time.

Of the other favourites, Djokovic seems like the only credible alternative.

The outsiders

Loser of the Monte-Carlo Masters final in April, Andrey Rublev is an outsider worth keeping an eye on.

The Russian has since reached two more quarter-finals on clay, and has also reached the last eight of his last three grand slams – including this tournament last year.

Pablo Carreno Busta might also be worth a small each-way flutter.

He reached the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open last month and is placed on the side of the draw that avoids Nadal and Djokovic.
