The favourites

Reigning champion Iga Swiatek is the clear favourite to win the French Open, and it’s not hard to see why.

The 19-year-old brilliantly powered her way to this title last year, not losing a single set and only losing 28 games in seven matches.

Having also won last week’s Italian Open, destroying Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-0 in the final, she is a very good bet to be lifting the title in two weeks.

Australian Ashleigh Barty is probably her closest challenger.

Barty won this title herself two years ago, her only Grand Slam to date, and beat Swiatek in the third round of the Madrid Open in April.

There are some injury concerns surrounding the Australian, though, after she retired in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open against Coco Gauff.

The outsiders

Gauff herself could be worth keeping an eye on.

The 17-year-old was only beaten by Swiatek in the Italian Open and won the Parma Challenger last week, admittedly in a weakened field.

A match-up with Barty in round four would be a match worth watching.

Paula Badosa reached the semi-finals of the Madrid Open in April before cantering to the Serbia Open title last week.

The Spaniard has a very limited track record in Grand Slams but is in the form to go well – particularly as she is in the same quarter as Naomi Osaka, who has never performed particularly well at Roland-Garros.
