The favourites

Daniil Medvedev is among the three favourites to win this title, suggesting that the changing of the guard in men’s tennis has at least begun.

Medvedev – who can’t face Novak Djokovic until the final and has little competition in his quarter – reached the final of the US Open in September, and only narrowly lost to Djokovic in the ATP Cup last week.

But having beaten Nadal in the final to win that competition, the Serb is the deserved favourite.

His record in this competition is unparalleled. The defending champions has lifted the title seven times, including in six of the last nine years.

Excluding the French Open, which is Rafael Nadal’s domain, Djokovic has won four of the last five majors and is in the form to make it five from six.

Djokovic also has the draw on his side, avoiding Nadal and Medvedev until the final.

Best of the rest

It may reflect his diminishing powers, but Roger Federer’s price of seems sizeable.

The Swiss won this title in 2017 and 2018, and had two Championship points on serve in the Wimbledon final in 2019, suggesting that he still has the wherewithal to win another major.

Backing a winner from anywhere else is a long shot, but Grigor Dimitrov seems likely to perform better than his price.

The Bulgarian has never been strong at majors, but he did beat Roger Federer on his way to the semi-finals of the US Open in September. He also lost to Djokovic in the last four of the Paris Masters in November.
