The favourites

After beating Novak Djokovic in last week’s Italian Open final, winning his two sets 6-0 and 6-1, Rafael Nadal certainly justifies his price to win the French Open again.

Nadal’s relationship with Roland-Garros needs little introduction.

He has won 11 of the last 14 editions of this tournament, including the last two. On his way to winning the 2018 title, he dropped just one set, thrashing Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

Djokovic has been in decent nick heading into this tournament.

The Australian Open champion won the Madrid Masters earlier this month, seeing off Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the process.

So, though that defeat in Rome has set him back, the world No. 1 is a likely runner-up.

In terms of the betting, Thiem is a clear third-favourite.

The Austrian did beat Nadal in Barcelona last month, but he has since lost to Djokovic and Fernando Verdasco in Madrid and Rome.

Thiem is a solid bet to be a semi-finalist, having reached the last four in the last three seasons, but he is unlikely to take the next step.

The outsiders

Even with some of the big odds floating around, there are very few players who hold much appeal.

But Stefano Tsitsipas , who has only lost to Djokovic and Nadal this month, is one.

The Greek won the Estoril Open in the first week of May, and has subsequently reached the final and semi-final of the Madrid Open and Rome Open respectively, before running into the world’s two best players.

He is in the same half of the draw as Nadal, but can certainly complete the semi-final line-up.

Fabio Fognini , who won last month’s Monte-Carlo Masters before losing to Thiem and Tsitsipas in Madrid and Rome, is also of interest.

One player you should dwell on is Roger Federer , who is making his first appearance at Roland Garros for three years.
