What is the history of the US Open?

The US Open was originally known as the US National Championship, and was first held in August 1881 at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island, which is now the home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

While the tournament is now played on hardcourt, it was originally held on grass until 1974, then on clay until 1977, and finally on the current surface since 1978.

For the first six years, only men were allowed to compete, with both a singles and doubles tournament taking place.

In 1887, the first US Women’s National Singles Championship was held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

Both tournaments initially used a challenge system in which the defending champion automatically qualified for the final, where they would take on the winner of the all-comers competition.

In 1915, the men’s tournament moved to the West Side Tennis Club in Queen’s, New York, with the women’s tournament following in 1921.

Nine years later, in 1924, the International Lawn Tennis Federation designated the US National Championship as one of the world’s major tennis tournaments.

Up until 1968, only amateur players were allowed to compete, but the beginning of the open era saw professionals enter the tournament for the first time.

In 1973, the US Open became the first Grand Slam to award equal prize money to men and women, with singles champions John Newcombe and Margaret Court receiving $25,000 each.

After three years on clay, the US Open moved to the hard courts of the newly constructed USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, where it is still played today. 

The complex was renamed USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 2006, in honour of the four-time US Open champion and women’s tennis pioneer.
