Volkanovski vs Holloway odds

Two of MMA’s greatest ever featherweights face off for a third time on Saturday night as Alexander Volkanovski again defends his UFC title against Max Holloway.

The pair squared off in back-to-back fights between December 2019 and July 2020, with Volkanovski taking the belt off Holloway with a unanimous decision at UFC 245 and then successfully defending it in a split decision at UFC 251.

Since that second fight, the champion has reeled off impressive wins over Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung, while Holloway has impressively beaten Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez, taking his career record to 29-6 and setting up this trilogy fight.

Holloway was once a dominant champion, winning the featherweight title and defending it three times as part of a 13-fight winning streak that spanned nearly five years, but a lightweight title shot against Dustin Poirier in 2019 resulted in defeat before Volkanovski ended his title reign at featherweight.

Volkanovski, meanwhile, is on a 21-fight winning streak and now boasts a 24-1 professional record, including going 11-0 since joining the UFC in 2016, with wins over some featherweight greats including Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes.

It’s been nine years since the Australian suffered the only defeat of his career, and he’s a favourite to successfully defend his title again on Saturday night.

Holloway, meanwhile, is a underdog as he looks to recapture the featherweight belt.

Volkanovski vs Holloway prediction

Both previous meetings between these two fighters were essentially too close to call.

Volkanovski dominated early in the first fight, but Holloway battled back to almost snatch victory. The rematch saw the roles reversed, as Holloway won the early exchanges before the champion came on strong and eked out another victory.

This fight should again be extremely close, given that both fighters have looked fantastic in the time since their last meeting.

Holloway dominated Kattar with a virtuoso striking performance that included some of the most impressive showboating ever seen in the Octagon, and again looked great against Rodriguez, even displaying some rarely-seen wrestling ability.

Meanwhile, Volkanovski has simply looked like the best fighter in the division, with elite speed, power, cardio and wrestling making him just about as well-rounded a featherweight as we’ve ever seen.

These two are again going to stand toe-to-toe for five rounds, and the question is whether Holloway’s relentless volume can finally overwhelm Volkanovski, who has always held the power advantage and just about managed to back the Hawaiian up enough to gain an edge from the judges.

It’s often said that you have to win decisively to take the belt off the champion, and given that a finish looks unlikely between these two, it has to be said that the odds are against Holloway here despite how evenly matched this title fight appears.

It could go either way, but Volkanovski on points once again looks the best bet.
