The greatest female fighter of all time returns to the Octagon on Saturday night as Amanda Nunes defends her UFC featherweight title against Megan Anderson.

Nunes became the fourth fighter – and first woman – to hold two UFC belts simultaneously when she beat Cris Cyborg to claim the featherweight strap in December 2018.

The Brazilian was already the bantamweight champion at the time, having won that title against Miesha Tate two years earlier.

Since beating Cyborg, Nunes has successfully defended the featherweight title once and the bantamweight title a further two times, extending her current winning streak to 11 and cementing her place as one of the best mixed martial artists ever.

She beat Felicia Spencer by decision in her last fight in June and can see off another top featherweight contender in Anderson this weekend.

The Australian has won back-to-back fights to earn this title shot, beating Zarah Fairn Dos Santos by submission in October of 2019 before knocking out Norma Dumont Viana in the first round last February.

Though she’s light on UFC experience, having fought in the promotion just five times in two and a half years, Anderson is a former Invicta featherweight champion with an 11-4 professional record.

Nevertheless, she’s a massive underdog for this fight, currently to win.

Nunes, meanwhile, is the favourite.

Nunes v Anderson prediction

Anderson has looked impressive in securing first-round finishes in her last two fights, but it’s hard to see a path to victory for her on Saturday night.

Nunes’ combination of size, power and accuracy makes her arguably the most formidable pound-for-pound striker in the entire UFC, equally capable of securing an early stoppage or dominating for all five rounds.

The 32-year-old is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and an excellent wrestler, so she’s hardly going to be dominated on the mat if Anderson takes the fight there.

The question, then, is how quickly Nunes can secure a win, and on this occasion it looks worth backing a first-round finish.

Eight of Nunes’ 13 UFC wins have come inside the first round, including two of her last four. Those two were against all-time greats in Cyborg and Holly Holm, both of whom possess much more experience and striking prowess than Anderson.

The Aussie has never been knocked out, but she did lose by first-round submission in her last defeat to Spencer in May 2019.

Nunes is unstoppable when she gets into a rhythm early on, and Anderson just doesn’t seem to have the tools to keep the champion at bay on Saturday night.
