The main event at UFC 264 is set to be one of the biggest fights of the year as Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier face off in a trilogy bout that will bring an end to their seven-year rivalry.

This fight also has massive ramifications for the wider lightweight division, with the winner likely to be first in line for champion Charles Oliveira.

These two first met back in 2014 as McGregor steamrolled through Poirier on his way to the featherweight belt.

The American then got his long-awaited revenge at UFC 257 in January as he picked off McGregor with a barrage of calf kicks before securing a second-round knockout.

Poirier has now won six of his last seven fights, including statement wins over McGregor, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway and Dan Hooker.

‘The Diamond’ comes into UFC 264 as the slight favourite to round off the trilogy with a win.

McGregor, meanwhile, has dropped three of his last six, with those six fights spread over a five-year period during which his focus has drifted away from the UFC.

Poirier v McGregor prediction

McGregor looked far from his best in January as Poirier landed a succession of debilitating calf kicks before going upstairs to finish the fight with a trademark combination.

The Irishman claims his build-up to the fight had been distracted by a potential boxing match against Manny Pacquiao, and has vowed not to make the same mistake again.

The signs coming out of his camp suggest we might see vintage McGregor on Saturday, and he will have learned some valuable lessons from that fight at UFC 257.

He is likely to return to the wide-stance, karate style that brought him such great success in his early UFC days in an attempt to counteract the threat of those leg kicks.

Poirier may then turn to his superior wrestling to try and gain an advantage, but the 32-year-old tends to be drawn into stand-up exchanges, and that is where McGregor thrives.

At his best, McGregor is up there with the very elite on the feet and although Poirier can more than hold his own in that department, the Irishman just edges that battle.

He will need to dominate early, though, because Poirier’s cardio is world-class, and he will start to take over should the fight go into the late rounds.
