The main event of UFC 255 sees Deiveson Figueiredo defend his men’s flyweight belt against No. 4-ranked Alex Perez.

Figueiredo was originally slated to fight former bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt at the UFC APEX, but he tore a bicep in camp and was ruled out in early October.

Perez, who was scheduled to face Brandon Moreno on the main card, stepped in and will attempt to become just the fourth champion in the history of the division.

Figueiredo missed weight for his first attempt at the 125lb title but his knockout of Joseph Benavidez earned him an instant rematch.

‘God of War’ made no mistake at the second attempt, submitting Benavidez in the first round on Fight Island in July to claim the strap.

The Brazilian now holds an impressive career record of 19-1 and enters his first defence as clear favourite.

Challenger Perez holds a strong 24-5 record himself, and is coming off three straight wins against quality opposition.

He has a 6-1 record in the UFC, including four finishes, with his only loss coming against four-time challenger Benavidez.

Perez, who will become the first fighter to have earned a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series and then fought for a UFC title, enters Saturday as a underdog.

Figueiredo has been utterly formidable during his time in the UFC, winning eight of his nine fights with six finishes – four knockouts and two submissions.

‘God of War’ holds more power than almost anyone at 125lb, with his nine career knockouts proving his threat on the feet.

He is also an aggressive grappler, with seven submission wins to his name. Four of those came by way of guillotine, with Figueiredo regularly finding the finish after stuffing a takedown.

His all-round ability is likely to prove too much for Perez, whose best chance lies in taking the champ into rounds four and five.

Figueiredo has struggled with his cardio in the past, and Perez has the ability to outwork him should he manage to reach the championship rounds.

It is hard to look past the champion, though, with ‘God of War’ possessing so many weapons with which he can end the fight.

Four of Perez’s five career losses have come via knockout or submission, so he is vulnerable to a stoppage.

Should he challenge Figueiredo on the feet, the champion’s accurate and powerful striking is likely to prove decisive.

And if Perez tries and take the fight to the ground, Figueiredo will hunt for that submission and more than likely find it.

The safe bet here would be Figueiredo to win by KO, TKO or disqualification at , but the submission may be worth a small punt at an attractive price of .
