Conor McGregor returns to the Octagon on Saturday night for the first time in just over a year, having knocked out Donald Cerrone in his last appearance at UFC 246 in January 2020.

‘The Notorious’ has fought just twice in the UFC since November 2016, with the other fight being his lightweight title defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018.

Meeting McGregor in the Octagon this weekend is Poirier, the No. 2 lightweight contender who McGregor beat by TKO back in 2014.

Since that fight, Poirier has managed to grind his way back to the top of the division and held the interim lightweight title before being beaten by Nurmagomedov in September 2019.

‘The Diamond’ bounced back from that defeat by beating Dan Hooker in June to set up this rematch with McGregor.

Poirier is currently the underdog for Saturday night’s fight, while McGregor is the clear favourite at .

Poirier has come a long way since he first fought McGregor.

While the Irishman rapidly rose to superstardom and claimed two UFC belts in quick succession, Poirier was forced to fight his way back into the title picture and did so with big wins over opponents like Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje and Anthony Pettis.

Poirier has developed into one of the best boxers in the entire UFC, and will be in with a chance if he manages to drag McGregor into the later rounds on Saturday night.

The problem for Poirier, however, is that he takes plenty of shots despite his boxing ability, and that doesn’t bode well for his chances against McGregor.

Poirier’s proven he has a good chin, particularly in wars against Alvarez and Gaethje, but there just seems to be something about how McGregor throws his signature left hand that stops opponents in their tracks.

He put Poirier away with a left hook that barely even grazed the target when these two fighters first met, and has done the same to several opponents over the years.

McGregor’s inactivity is a concern, but he looked as good as ever when coming back from a long lay-off to stop Cerrone in just 40 seconds last January, and it’s safe to assume he’s still got plenty left at the age of 32.
