Woodley v Luque odds

Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will be hoping to snap a three-fight losing streak when he faces Vicente Luque at the UFC Apex on Saturday night.

Woodley is recognised as one of the greatest welterweights of all time after a title reign that lasted four fights over a two-year period, but at 38 the American is now in dire need of a win to have any shot of regaining his title before he retires.

Woodley lost the belt to Kamaru Usman in a one-sided decision defeat back in March 2019, and he has since also lost to Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington to fall to seventh in the welterweight rankings.

In contrast, Luque is a fighter on the rise following stoppage wins over Niko Price and Randy Brown. The 29-year-old has won eight of his last nine bouts, with a defeat to Stephen Thompson in November 2019 – which was named Fight of the Night – the only exception.

‘The Silent Assassin’ has earned a reputation as one of the division’s most exciting fighters – nine of his last 10 victories have come inside the distance, and a title shot may not be far off if he beats Woodley, with champion Usman searching for viable contenders.

At , Luque is the clear favourite to earn the win in this co-main event.

Losing three fights in a row isn’t necessarily a complete disaster when you’re fighting opponents at the top of the division, but the manner of Woodley’s three defeats should cause huge concern for the former champion.

He was completely overwhelmed in all three fights and seems hesitant to pull the trigger with the right hand that made him such a dangerous fighter in his prime.

Woodley has always been happy to fight on the back foot and load up on counter shots, but that tactic simply hasn’t worked since he beat Darren Till back in September 2018.

If the 38-year-old is a spent force, Luque will make it very apparent.

The Brazilian-born American has all the tools to cause Woodley major problems. He fights on the front foot, has an excellent ground game if Woodley shoots for the takedown and is durable enough to withstand a big shot if the former champion is willing to fire away.

Luque’s style would put him in danger of being knocked out if he was fighting the Woodley of old. Given the fighters’ current trajectories, though, it’s much more likely that the younger man dominates throughout on the way to a win on points.
