Whittaker v Till odds:

The UFC’s stint on Fight Island comes to an end on Saturday with a 15-fight card headlined by two of the very best in the middleweight division.

Former champion Robert Whittaker enters the cage for the first time in almost 10 months following his knockout loss to current 185lb king Israel Adesanya.

He faces a serious test in Liverpool’s Darren Till, who is looking for his second straight win since moving up from welterweight.

‘The Gorilla’ last fought in November, securing a split decision victory over former middleweight title contender Kelvin Gastelum with a calculated performance.

A step up in quality to Whittaker does, however, see him head to Abu Dhabi as the betting underdog, at to win by any means.

‘The Reaper’, meanwhile, returns to action as favourite to win and put himself back in contention to regain his belt.

Whittaker v Till prediction:

It is tempting to jump on the Till hype train, with the Liverpudlian building up a dedicated following over the course of his nine fights in the UFC.

Wins over Gastelum, Stephen Thompson and Donald Cerrone illustrate his talent, but this looks a step too far for the 27-year-old.

Till has relied on his physical dominance over opponents in the past, particularly at welterweight, where he hulked over most in the division and was able to pick fighters off with his heavy left hand.

That won’t be the case against Whittaker, who is very close in height, reach and size to Till.

It is easy to forget just how good Whittaker was before his loss to Adesanya last time out. The Australian went on a seven-fight streak after his move up to 185lb in June 2014.

That run encompassed two wins over Yoel Romero, and Whittaker also dispatched both Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza and Derek Brunson with relative ease prior to that.

There are questions over his durability after the damage he took across his last three fights, as he has also endured a string of injuries in his career.

Whittaker has had plenty of time to recover, though, and should find plenty of joy on the feet against Till, who leaves large gaps in his guard when coming forward.

Jorge Masvidal proved that Till is vulnerable on the feet if you pick your shots correctly, and Whittaker’s nine KO wins prove he is more than capable of doing that.
